BHAVANA MENON’S A PORTRAIT OF GRIT AND GRACE: South Indian actress and sexual assault survivor Bhavana Menon has become the portrait of resilience and quiet strength. In February 2017, the actress was returning from filming in Kerala when she was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted in a moving vehicle by a group of men. A popular actor and producer was accused of orchestrating the attack that involved filming the violent act in order to blackmail her later. But Bhavana hasn’t let that sordid crime define her existence. She’s now making her comeback into Malayalam films. Earlier, the very thought of re-entering that industry triggered unpleasant memories. While the case is still under trial, Bhavana has conquered her fears and taken the plunge. She tells us that she has occasional meltdowns and anxiety attacks, but she hasn’t let it break her spirit. Here’s to women, like her, who speak their truth and lead their life with dignity even under fire. We need more such survivors to chart their own journeys.
