DUBAI TIGHTENS CRYPTO REGULATIONS: Dubai has tightened regulations on using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin for property and retail transactions. Dubai's Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) is enhancing compliance processes and consumer protection, with guidelines extending to mainland and free zones. Entities eligible for a Full Market Product License are to transition to VARA regulation by August 31. Dubai's Department of Economy & Tourism (DET) will manage inspections and penalties for VARA, enhancing consumer protection. VARA and DET will also collaborate on campaigns designed to raise awareness towards consumer protection in the virtual asset space, including ‘communicating consumer protection information and advice’. BATTLING, BEATING BREAST CANCER: October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will see the annual Pink Caravan initiative make a return. This drive will encompass free screenings, mobile clinics, and awareness programs centred around the early detection of breast cancer. Organised by the Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), the caravan rallies the participation of both the public and private sectors and the Community, encouraging them to actively contribute to its mission. Breast cancer, which claimed over 685,000 lives in 2020, is largely curable, and most patients who receive the right care go on to lead long, healthy lives. According to the US National Cancer Institute, 90.3 per cent of women with breast cancer survive the disease five years following diagnosis. Women who are diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer have a 99 per cent 5-year survival rate. The key is early diagnosis. Campaigns like the Pink Caravan help promote awareness, provide early detection screenings, and offer support to cancer patients. The campaign needs every help they can get from the community to beat breast cancer. (By Jay Hilotin, Senior Assistant Editor)

MIGRANT TRAGEDY DEMANDS ACTION: The tragic incident off Cape Verde's coast, where over 60 migrants are feared dead while seeking better lives, underscores the pressing need for coordinated global action on migration. While some survivors were rescued from the drifting boat, the heartbreaking situation highlights the dangers migrants face and the imperative to address root causes such as poverty and lack of opportunities. Let us not forget that these migrants were individuals with dreams, aspirations, and families. Their stories must not be reduced to statistics. Urgent efforts are needed to tackle systemic issues, and offer humanitarian aid, ensuring that migration does not become a perilous necessity. (By Sadiq Shaban, Opinion Editor)

WHY US BASKETBALL TEAM'S VISIT TO THE UAE IS A GAME-CHANGER: Basketball is not a very popular game in the UAE, but the scenario is set to change after the US basketball team decided to play a couple of games in Abu Dhabi. The agenda behind the visit is to promote the game globally and the US basketball team has taken every step to ensure they support the widespread interest in the game. The team will be playing Greece and Germany at the Etihad arena from August 17-19 in preparations to the World Cup that is starting at the end of the month in Philippines. US coach Steve Kerr puts it aptly saying, "We want to spread the game and goodwill. The sport brings people together and crosses boundaries. We feel like we are sharing our game, but also representing the US hopefully in a very decent, respectful way of working." Let's hope that they can keep the momentum going for the future of the sport on a global scale. (By Jai Prasad V Rai, Assistant Editor)
