India, Pakistan likely to meet in Asia Cup cricket, Samantha Ruth Prabhu's fighting spirit
Cyclone Biparjoy strikes : Cyclone Biparjoy has made a landfall in some coastal parts of India and Pakistan with gusty winds, heavy rain, and widespread damage. Villages in western Gujarat in India were left without power as trees, electricity pylons, and boats suffered destruction. The cyclone's intensity is gradually expected to weaken, but northwest India remains under heavy rainfall warnings until Saturday. Rainfall amounts of 250 mm are expected. Several precautionary measures have been taken along the cyclone's path, including the relocation of livestock to higher ground, the closure of some schools, and the suspension of fishing activities in India and Pakistan. Authorities in both countries need to diligently monitor the cyclone's progression and prioritise the safety of the public. (By Sadiq Shaban, Opinion Editor)

GRACE PERIOD WELCOME: Since January 2023, the UAE Unemployment Insurance Scheme has already recorded 4.6 million registrations. This reflects the awareness community members have about the need for such a scheme. Its success is remarkable, and signifies the broader knowledge people have about the advantages it offers: insured employees can obtain temporary cash compensation for a period of three months from the date of loss of employment. For Dh5 to Dh10 per month, depending on salary, an individual who is insured gets compensated amounting to 60 per cent of their average basic salary in the last six months preceding their job loss or termination for non-disciplinary reasons. For those who failed to register in the scheme, the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has extended the deadline from July 1, 2023 to October 1, 2023 — before fines are imposed. This grace period allows more time for individual employees to register and come under this social safety net. (By Jay Hilotin, Senior Assistant Editor)

UAE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR REVIVES: Dubai and Abu Dhabi's off-plan property boom is fueling a resurgence in the UAE's construction sector. After a challenging phase, including the liquidation of Arabtec and cashflow issues faced by several companies, there is now optimism within the sector. The recent launch of projects like Palm Jebel Ali and upcoming developments at Expo City and Palm Jumeirah are generating significant construction awards. Infrastructure projects, investments in healthcare and education facilities, along with stable material and shipping costs, are further contributing to the sector's momentum. While larger contractors secure major contracts, smaller firms are finding opportunities in villa projects. (By Nivetha Dayanand, Web Editor)
