BYE-BYE BOEING 747: After over five decades of service, Boeing is finally stopping production of the 747. The imposing twin-aisle jet was the mainstay of several carriers, especially for long-haul flights. But its time had come to an end. As technology advanced, the four-engine plane not only lost out on efficiency to its younger siblings and rivals, it was also more expensive to maintain. The Queen of the Skies, easily recognised with its humped fuselage, was earlier scheduled to retire in 2024. But the pandemic, which saw passenger numbers sharply dwindle, ensured an early goodbye to a plane considered the most stable by veteran pilots. (By Anupam Varma, Assistant Editor)
