BEWARE OF ONLINE INVESTMENT SCAMS: It’s all been said before – and will need repeating again. Investors should not fall for the seemingly too-good-to-be-true offers coming their way through the many online channels open to them. For the legions of recent entrants to the UAE’s stock markets, not adhering to this can cause untold harm. Every week warnings are sounded out, and even with all the cautions in place, there are the gullible who fall for the ‘can’t miss’ opportunity. Salik, the DFM-listed entity, issued a stark warning against scams that show up on social media channels. Investors should keep in mind that such offers are getting more compelling. TRUMP'S DATE WITH JUSTICE: Former US President Donald Trump is in Miami, Florida, for his court appearance where he faces charges of mishandling national security files. He denies any wrongdoing and has accused the Biden administration of using law enforcement agencies against him. The charges relate to the alleged retention of classified information, including nuclear secrets. Trump's close aide, Walt Nauta, also faces charges and they are scheduled to appear in court together. The indictment claims Trump obstructed the FBI's investigation into the missing files. HUMANITARIAN HUB: The UAE has established itself as a humanitarian hub, with the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD)/World Food Programme (WFP) facility at the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai, a 16,500 sqm facility set up in 2008. The Dubai hub has quickly become a regional base for the UN’s humanitarian work, affirming Dubai’s status as a logistics gateway to the world. With the IHC’s facility in the UAE, the humanitarian agency is in a position to respond to any emergency crisis in the region in the fastest and most cost-effective and efficient manner. NET GAINS FOR UAE IN WORLD PADEL LEAGUE: Padel is one of the fastest growing sport in the world and has made rapid strides in UAE over the last 10 years. Several academies have played their roles in the development of the sport, which is played from a social level to professional standards. The World Padel League, comprising four teams with a galaxy of stars, showcased their talents in Dubai over the weekend. But what made a huge difference is the presence of four Emirati players - Abdullah Abdullah, Fares Aljanahi, Abdulla Ahli and Salem Alhouli - who returned rich with experience and were able to pick up the nuances of the game, on how the champions prepare for a match and how they execute it. This is what we observed when we had to gather news on the untimely deaths of two actors from different worlds. Earlier this week, South Korean actress Park Soon Ryun died after a nasty fall from stairs at just 29. Earlier this morning, Hollywood actor Treat Williams succumbed to injuries from a motorcycle crash in Vermont. He was 71. These two back-to-back tragedies and freak accidents underline the fleeting nature of life. Both these actors captivated audiences with their talent and versatility. Their colleagues remember them as kind and generous, and their sudden departure is being deeply felt by all those who worked with them and admired them.
