US becomes third country to establish formal diplomatic relations with UAE.

March 20, 1972

Diplomatic relations are established between the UAE and the US.

May 15, 1972

US Embassy opens in Abu Dhabi.

1974

UAE opens embassy in Washington, DC.

July 28, 1984

UAE athletes participate in their first summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

August 2, 1990

Iraq invades Kuwait. The UAE provides financial and logistical assistance to the US during Operation Desert Storm.

1999

UAE troops participate in the Kosovo Force (KFOR), a Nato-led international peacekeeping force established under the UN mandate. The UAE is the only Arab country to do so.

2002

The UAE-US Strategic Partnership launched.

2004

The UAE-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement signed.

2005

The UAE-US Joint Military Commission is established.

July 24, 2005

The UAE and US begin Free Trade Agreement negotiations. Value of trade between the UAE and US exceeds $5.2 billion (Dh19 billion) in 2004. The UAE is considered the third biggest trade partner for the US in the region.

2006

The US-UAE Joint Terrorist Financing Coordinating Committee launched to address issue of financing of terrorism.

Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology cooperate to establish world’s first graduate level university on future energy headquartered in Abu Dhabi.

May 16, 2007

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, visits US.

2008

The UAE hosts visit by US President George W. Bush.

April 21, 2008

The US becomes the second country the UAE signs an agreement with on peaceful nuclear energy cooperation.

August 4, 2008

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on official visit to the US for talks with US President George W. Bush on fighting terrorism and boosting economic cooperation.

December 17, 2009

The UAE becomes first country in the Arabian Gulf to sign an agreement with the US on development of civilian nuclear energy programme. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation established.

2011

The US and UAE announce Abu Dhabi will be the headquarters for Hedayah, the International Centre of Excellence in Countering Violent Extremism.

The US becomes the third-largest trade partner of the UAE with non-oil trade amounting to more than $24 billion (Dh88 billion)

April 20, 2015

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, on two-day visit to Washington for talks with US President Barack Obama.

The UAE’s Consulate opens in Los Angeles, the country’s first Consulate in the US.

The US and UAE partner to launch Sawab Centre, a multinational online messaging and engagement programme to counter extremist propaganda.
