Abu Dhabi: An Indian expat who was in a coma for 52 days following a stroke will be airlifted to India on Thursday.

Mustafa Kandath Vallapil, 53, who worked as a supervisor with LuLu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi, will be sent to Kerala in an air ambulance arranged by the LuLu Group.

His son Sabil Mustafa told Gulf News that his father had collapsed while on duty at the vegetable section of the hypermarket in Khalidiya Mall on March 16.

He was admitted at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi where he has been undergoing treatment. However, doctors and family decided to move the patient to his home town Kerala, for which the air ambulance had to be arranged.

“We do not have to pay hospital bills because he has insurance coverage. Now, the air ambulance which will cost Dh140,000 is sponsored by his company,” said Sabil.

“I wouldn’t have been able to arrange this huge amount, especially now because I have lost my job after I came to look after my father for so long,” he added.

V. Nandakumar, chief communication officer of LuLu Group, said the company always attaches great importance towards welfare of our staff irrespective of the seniority or service tenure.

“We hope and sincerely pray that Mustafa recovers soon and gets back to normal life,” he said.

A medical team will accompany Mustafa, who is now on a ventilator. The air ambulance is scheduled to leave Al Bateen Airport at 10 to Kochi International Airport in Kerala.

He will be shifted to a local hospital there.
