Sharjah: Sharjah Police have selected 10 locations in the emirate to place cannons to be fired to announce the Iftar time during Ramadan.

Two more cannons will be added to cover additional areas this year.

The locations where Iftar cannons will be fired are: near Sharjah Cultural Palace, Al Juraina, near Al Sari Mosque, Al Noor Mosque at Sharjah Waterfront, Al Mirgab, Majlis Mughaider in Al Talla, Bukhari Mosque at Khorfakkan Corniche, Tarif Mosque in Kalba, Shaikh Rashid Bin Ahmad Al Qasimi Mosque in Dibba Al Hisn and near Al Dhaid police station.

Colonel Dr Ahmad Saeed Al Naour, Deputy Director General of Sharjah Police Central Operations, inspected the cannons to ensure its readiness, and met the individuals who will firing cannons. He urged them to abide by all security and safety procedures when firing ceremonial cannons throughout the month of Ramadan.

Colonel Al Naour said firing of cannons to announce the Iftar time is an old custom being followed in Arab and Muslim countries. He said a large number of people, including non-Muslims, gather at the places where cannons are fired to announce iftar time. He said in Sharjah a number of people call their families back home so they can see them on Sharjah TV as the proceedings are telecast live.

Colonel Al Naour urged people coming to watch the cannon firing proceedings to not to park their vehicles in the middle of the road as it leads to traffic jams.
