Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi University’s (ADU) Zakat Fund has distributed scholarships worth Dh50 million to more than 1,500 outstanding students till date, it was announced on Wednesday.

The scholarships were offered under the initiative, ‘Our Youth Our Responsibility, Our Zakat Our Immunity’, run in association with the Zakat Fund.

The annual initiative, which was launched in 2010, aims to help deserving students who are eligible for financial support as per the conditions and criteria for zakat complete their bachelor’s programmes.

The initiative through Zakat Fund has achieved great success and collected the Dh50 million from zakat and other donations, helping to ease the financial burden of deserving students from poor family backgrounds across ADU’s campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, and its learning centre in Al Dhafra Region.

Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Daheri, chairman of ADU’s Executive Board, said: “This annual scholarship programme reiterates ADU’s sustained efforts and humanitarian role in supporting the educational and social stability of the UAE society. Our efforts articulate the directives of the UAE’s wise leadership to adopt social responsibility practices in the higher education domain in partnership with like-minded organisations.”

He added that the scholarship programme is aligned with ADU’s efforts to support the Year of Zayed initiative, which promotes the values of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. These values, he said, support the advancement of society and accelerate the development of the UAE’s education sector.

“At ADU, we consistently facilitate our students in advancing their academic achievements through providing them with best-in-class opportunities. Through helping the most deserving students pay their tuition fees, thereby significantly easing the financial burden on both students and their parents, ADU encourages them to pursue their academic goals with diligence and earn a reliable academic degree from our prestigious educational institution,” he said.

ADU also invited individuals, organisations and stakeholders to contribute generously to the initiative that expands the opportunities for students to pursue their studies and earn an academic degree in their chosen fields.
