Latifa Mohammad, a 23-year-old Emirati from Al Ain, received the first kidney in the UAE procured from a deceased donor. The donor was a 29-year-old victim of a road traffic accident in Saudi Arabia.

Heart

A 38-year-old Emirati man became the first person in the UAE to receive a transplanted heart from a deceased donor.

The kidneys of the deceased donor were also used to save two other people in Abu Dhabi who needed kidney transplants.

Liver

Mohammad Al Kuthairi, a 60-year-old Emirati, benefited from the first full liver transplant from a deceased donor in the UAE. The donor liver was retrieved from a hospital in Ajman, and the procedure took eight hours. The deceased donor in this case was also able to provide one of his kidneys to a patient at the hospital, and the other to a patient at Shaikh Khalifa Medical City and other organs to patients in Saudi Arabia.

Lung

The first lung transplant in the UAE from a deceased donor was performed. The donor lung was retrieved from a hospital in Fujairah via air ambulance, and the recipient was a 53-year-old Emirati. His right lung was transplanted in surgery lasting three-and-a-half hours, and he is now in recovery at the hospital.

Double lungs

Where: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

The recipient was a 45-year-old Arab mother-of-six. The surgery took five-and-a-half hours.

The donor’s liver was transplanted into a female patient with liver cirrhosis from Ras Al Khaimah, and one kidney was given to another patient at the hospital. The second kidney was transplanted into a 15-year-old patient at Shaikh Khalifa Medical City.
