Dubai: Around 300 workers were treated to lunch by the Golden Age Group for the elderly in The Greens & Views residential community in Dubai on International Workers’ Day on Tuesday.
The annual occasion, also known as Labour Day, May Day or Workers’ Day in some countries, is marked to celebrate and appreciate blue-collar workers.
On Tuesday, the Golden Age Group, which has almost 70 elderly residents as members, invited hundreds of workers in The Greens & Views for lunch at The Fairways cluster of residential towers in the community.
Naseem Durrani, founder of the group, said they wanted to honour the workers — facilities management, security, gardeners etc — for making their community safe, clean, pretty and problem-free. Durrani, 74, said Emaar, the developer of the community, sponsored the lunch.
Addressing the gathered workers shortly before lunch, Durrani said: “We want you to know we are with you and honour your service to the community. We would like you to realise how appreciated you all are. Because of your efforts, the only ‘problem’ in The Greens is that there is no problem at all.”
Workers then enjoyed servings of biryani, the popular meal in the region and the Indian subcontinent, where many of the workers are from. They were also served cold drinks.
“It feels so good to be honoured this way. The food is delicious and the hosts are so generous and courteous,” said Shayju Kunjumon, 35, a painter from India’s Kerala state.
