Dubai: Police in the UAE have warned children not to take part in the online game ‘Momo’ that has been doing the rounds on social media.

Fujairah Police was the latest force to issue caution against the online game that has circulated across social networking sites WhatsApp and Facebook.

The online game involves adding an unknown phone number that is said to belong to 'Momo', who has a terrifying face of a woman with massive eyes, sends players a series of challenges and threats. 

“A hidden spyware is installed in the user’s phone and steals the person’s private information. Players are then blackmailed, and have to complete a series of challenges, which ends by asking the user to commit suicide,” said Fujairah Police in a statement to the Arabic daily Al Bayan.  

If the players do not complete the challenges, they are subsequently threatened with the curse of an 'evil spell.'

Last week, Dubai Police warned residents not to circulate the game on WhatsApp and to report any incidents immediately to the hotline number 901.


Parents were also advised to keep a close watch on their children and to prevent them from participating in the deadly game, which was allegedly responsible for a number of suicide cases in several countries.
