All Emirati men aged between 18 and 30 years are now required to participate in the country’s military service. A partial exception is given to women, whose service is optional, however, all men in the category mentioned above are required to serve in the military, whether they are employed or not.

It is common knowledge that serving one’s country is not only an obligation and a sign of patriotism, but it is also a way of enhancing national unity and creating a sense of belonging. It is believed that military service plays a fundamental role in fostering general co-existence. The UAE is a politically stable country with a booming economy. However, being located in the middle of the world’s most politically unstable region, it is important for a law that requires Emiratis to acquire knowledge and skills on how to protect themselves and their land.

The country has been prospering in a number of economic and social aspects, and for this to continue, we, the citizens, have to be able to protect our wealth and sovereignty. The Gulf region has managed to conquer the problem of job creation and youth unemployment. The increasing population in this region, and particularly in the UAE, calls for the need to gainfully employ the increasing number of young people. Job creation is a major component in the plan to move forward.

The national service would create awareness and a sense of responsibility within the youth. While the service ensures that the country remains secure and busy, it also helps the youth to expand their imagination, thus enabling them to think past their boardroom opportunities. That is precisely why Emiratis received this new policy with a lot of gusto and positivity because having a national policy that ensures all youths are given a responsibility to serve their homeland, and creating better job opportunities is what any citizen in a country could ask from its government. Most Emiratis have, therefore, received this new legislation with enthusiasm and with the intention to give back to their country.
