Dubai: Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 got off to a cheery start on Sunday with Dubai-based designer Mona Fares unveiling her psychedelic, neon-tastic collection.

More than 40 outfits in vibrant fluorescent colours were rolled out onto the runway, much to the delight of Dubai's fashionable set who had descended upon the tent erected at the Atlantis.

"It feels great to open Dubai Fashion Week with my collection," she said.

"It's my first time here and I am glad that I was able to express my individuality through my collection Neon Edge. It sure was electrifying," said Fares after her show.

Heavyweights

As many as 40 designers including fashion heavyweights such as Manish Malhotra and Furne One will be showing their collections over the next five days this season, under the new management Capital Marketing.

"Our aim is to propel Dubai Fashion Week as a serious trade event and so far I am happy that things have kicked into gear. Like they say, well-begun is half done," said Manoj Bhojwani, Chairman of Capital Marketing and organiser of this season's fashion week from the sidelines. Show director Marc Robinson is also back in action this season.

"This time around we have tried our best to raise the bar when it comes to ramp shows and presentations. My biggest battle is to convince designers that it's less about theatrics and drama on stage and more about the clothes," said Robinson.

Meanwhile, Dubai's fashionable set are making it their business to soak in all the glamorous atmosphere. "Dubai Fashion Week is one of the most glamorous events on our list," said Mona Haider, a DFW front-row regular.

Dubai Fashion Week runs until Thursday.
