Mumbai, India, has a furious energy. Attractive to both dreamers and labourers, the city is a pulse point for the country’s film, finance and fashion industry. Gulf News reader Tasneem Shabbir explored the city on her friend’s scooter, and sent us these photographs.

Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and tomb, located on an islet off the coast of Worli in southern Mumbai. Shabbir took this picture from the landmark and said: ‘This young boy was working as a fisherman, rather than getting an education. It made me realise how much we take every blessing in our life for granted.’

Shabbir said: ‘This mother and son were sitting together on the shore of what once was a beach, and is now a dumping ground.’ According to a global study by US-based nonprofit organisation called Litter Base, the sea near Mumbai is among the most polluted in the world, due to vast amounts of garbage and plastic debris making its way from the beach to the water.
