A man was left seriously injured after a massive fire broke out at a scrap warehouse in Sharjah Industrial area 10 on Tuesday, Sharjah Civil Defence said.

Colonel Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence said the fire was reported at 12.25pm and that firefighters reached the scene within three minutes.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the site of the incident as Sharjah firefighters battled the fire.

Col Al Naqbi said the man who sustained injuries was one of the bystanders. “There was only one man injured and hospitalised,” he told Arabic media.

Firefighters from Samnan and Al Sajen stations worked together to control the blaze before it could spread to adjacent premises.

“It was brought under control and the cooling operations at the site are over,” he said.

Another official from Sharjah Civil Defence confirmed to Gulf News that the fire was put out by 1:06pm. He said the man who was injured the fire, “was an Indian national who was passing by the site during the fire.”

Police have launched an investigation to find out what caused the blaze, said Col Al Naqbi.
