It is unfair to judge Modi in 100 days

Modi’s government has brought governance to the country.

This is in response to the opinion article ‘Prime Minister Modi is full of empty promises’ published in the Views section of Gulf News on September 21, 2014.

The reader has raised three issues to conclude that Modi is full of empty promises. Indian Railways has been incurring colossal losses thanks to previous government policies of subsidies. How on earth can revenue be generated without increasing fares?

It has been reported in newspapers that Modi has zero tolerance to corruption and he may even remove some of the ministers with even the slightest suspicion of corruption. Does this not show that he is serious about corruption? To expect implementation of a controversial bill in 100 days is akin to asking for the moon. Removal of governors is a practice that has been traditionally followed by all the successive governments. So what is Modi’s fault in this?

To me, what is important is the process towards policy and decision making. Modi’s government has brought governance to the country and that is a major relief. There is no paralysis of government machinery. Modi’s biggest achievement is his forging of relationships with neighbours and bringing investments into India to develop infrastructure and generate employment. As a result, businessmen are now willing to invest in India to fuel the growth of the economy. The inflation has been reduced and people are generally happy with the way that the present government has functioned in the past 100 days. In a recent interview with CNN, Modi impressed the reporter who said that he had a completely different view of Modi before the interview. Modi’s intelligence and integrity are evidenced in this interview, which is his first international interview.

Modi and his government are on the right track and the results of the recent elections need not distract them as it is mostly the media trying to create panic amongst the people. Election results in India differ from elections elsewhere and to attribute it to Modi is nothing but stupidity. For example, can anyone imagine the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning an assembly seat in West Bengal?
