Pronghorns are the fastest land animals in North America. Their speed is their main defence mechanism against predators.

The Yellowstone National Park in the US is known for its stunning scenery, wildlife and geothermal features. Millions of visitors flock to the park each year to capture its beauty on camera. Gulf News reader Malabika Roy took these images on her visit, and said: “I am passionate about Nature and wildlife. It has definitely been on my bucket list to visit the park!”

Roy’s image is from the Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in the US, and the third largest in the world. She said: ‘We had to climb quite a lot to see this spectacular sight. These colours are caused by pigmented thermophilic bacteria that thrive on the rich minerals produced by the geothermic activity.’

Roy said: ‘This is a huge complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone National Park, which was created over thousands of years ago.’ Hot water from the spring cools down and deposites calcium carbonate, creating the landscape over time.

Bison and pronghorns are the most commonly found wild animals in Yellowstone. Roy said: ‘This particular huge bison was standing on the road, blocking the traffic. I took this opportunity to capture it from a very close distance, taking all the risk. Bison are very unpredictable and can attack without warning!’

Waterfall gushes in the Grand Canyon area of the national park. Nearly 14,000 years old, the canyon is 800 to 1,200 feet deep.

Roy said: ‘I took this picture from the far end of the boardwalk as other people were walking on it. The water is so hot that one could feel the heat in the surrounding place!”

A barn sits between the mountains as the sun rises. Roy said: ‘On my way to Yellowstone National Park, I visited the Moulton Barn along Mormon Row, which is now lying within Grand Teton National Park.’

Yellowstone has the Earth’s largest active geyser field. Roy said: ‘This geyser looked like the ruins of an old castle tower. I was lucky to witness a rainbow, which made it an extraordinary sight.’

The park is home to various kinds of plants that thrive around its rivers. Roy said: ‘The reflection of the Teton Mountains in the still, flat water on the Schwabacher River is just majestic.’
