The biting ban on Luiz Suarez was not too harsh.
With regards to the news that Uruguayan footballer Luiz Suarez has lost his appeal against a biting ban because of his conduct at the Fifa World Cup, I disagree with the decision to ban him as he had previously been banned in 2010 and 2013. And as evidenced in this year’s World Cup, he did not learn from his mistakes.
I believe that stricter measures should be taken in the form of increasing his fine.
As a footballer myself, I believe football is more than just a game, rather it is about behaviour and sportsmanship and with that in mind, Suarez’s biting is completely injustified.
This kind of behaviour does not belong in sports, and certainly not in football. I agree, football tends to become quite aggressive, but professionalism needs to be maintained at all times. And for a prominent player like Luis Suarez, it is vital to teach the spirit of football to others and to maintain his reputation.
Although, most footballers, including myself would argue that playing football for a living feels more like maintaining a hobby than a job. Therefore, it becomes even more important to maintain your reputation, and for Suarez, getting the chance to play in the World Cup and having fans all over the world, he needs to set the example for proper sportsmanship rather than doing the opposite. Therefore, banning him will not make him realise his mistakes, as having done it in the past, and still continuing to do so, the punishment is obviously not doing what it is supposed to. And if he does not show any kind of regret or change, he does not belong on the field.
