Dubai: Police confirmed that the video claiming the presence of surveillance cameras’ in hotel rooms in Dubai is wrong information.

A video by a GCC national went viral on Wednesday, where he claimed that a small device he spotted behind the TV in the hotel room was a camera, and that this was a breach of his privacy, said Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Police and General Security in Dubai.

He clarified in his tweet the claims being made in the video were not true in response to a Twitter user who asked about the authenticity of claims made in the video.

Lt Gen Khalfan informed the media that it appeared the GCC national had gotten confused, mistakenly assuming the TV receiver was a camera because he had not seen a similar device before.

A Dubai Police official said they have questioned the man who had made the video and he showed a police team the device he was talking about which turned out to be a gadget used to change TV channels.

The police official said the man should have first inquired about the device with the hotel management before taking the video.

Maj Gen Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police, said Dubai Police takes people’s privacy very seriously and the man could have contacted the police and reported the device.

The hotel, he said, will open a case against the man, as he named the hotel and made negative claims about its services, which spread rapidly on social media across the UAE and abroad.
