Dubai: The Malaysian Consulate-General has opened a Book of Condolence for the country’s former king who passed away on Monday.
The Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, passed away peacefully at 2.30pm on Monday, two months from what would have been his 90th birthday.
Sultan Abdul Halim made history when he became Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong (monarch and head of state) twice — first when he served as Agong between 1970 and 1975 and second in 2012. The Head of State is chosen from Malay rulers heading nine states in Malaysia.
Sultan Abdul Halim’s reign ended in December 2016, when he was replaced by Kelantan ruler Sultan Mohammad V.
The Consulate-General in Dubai opened a Book of Condolence on Tuesday and it will be open till Thursday, from noon until 3pm, for the public to sign. Malaysians in Dubai and Northern Emirates may also pay tribute to the former Sultan by penning their messages in the book.
Malaysian Consul-General Dato’ Yubazlan Yusof said he remembers the former Sultan as being the “people’s king” who will be fondly remembered by all Malaysians for his loving and caring personality. The Consul-General also invited all Muslims in the UAE to recite “Surat Al Fatiha” to the former Sultan.
