Dubai: Dubai Customs are reaching out to children at Modhesh World to raise awareness about critically endangered species and the importance of wildlife protection.
As part of a new programme running from August 3 to 16 at Modhesh World 2018 at World Trade Centre, Dubai Customs is showcasing some of the world’s critically endangered species, including confiscated pieces of ivory.
A series of edutainment activities are also being held as part of the programme, including sessions on fight against intellectual property rights infringements and the protection of endangered animals.
The UAE scored a major victory in its fight against wildlife trafficking and killing of African elephants for their ivory which is sold in the black market in Far East countries.
As part of a major crackdown by Dubai Customs and Dubai Police in recent years, 1,849 pieces of ivory were seized at Dubai International Airport a police official was quoted saying last month.
A large number of elephants are estimated to be killed by poachers every year and despite the attempts by authorities around the world, ivory continues to be illegally trafficked.
“Dubai Customs is always committed to take part in family-oriented activities like DSS’s Modhesh World. The objective of Dubai Customs participation in theses activities is to raise awareness about the illegal trade ii counterfeits and globally-protected species, as well as to support and promote Dubai as a preferred entertainment and family tourism destination,” Dubai Customs said in a statement.
With UAE authorities having recently confiscated and destroyed 75,000kg of counterfeit and banned products, Dubai Customs is also holding lectures that aim to educate children and community about the risks of buying counterfeit goods.
