Dubai: New ‘explosion-proof’ composite LPG cylinders will be made available to Al Khail Gate residential community as part of a move to enhance safety and reduce risks, it was announced on Wednesday.

Dubai Properties (DP), the developer of the gated community in Al Quoz, said it would be deploying ‘state-of-the-art’ composite LPG cylinders across all its communities, starting with Al Khail Gate, to provide residents access to safer cooking gas.

The new type of highly safe gas cylinders replace the traditional metal cylinders, which were banned in the community following a deadly blast last year caused by a gas leakage in an apartment. The explosion resulted in the death of an elderly woman and critical injuries to her daughter.

This new generation of lightweight cylinders is generally made of helically woven fibres, combined with resin, providing unique characteristics, such as being able to withstand a burst pressure that is twice as high as that of metal cylinders.

DP has partnered with Emirates Gas (EMGAS) as the main supplier of the composite LPG cylinders, who will be responsible for all related installations across Dubai Properties’ communities.

“The upgrade will include an LPG leak detection system connected to a new fire alarm technology and create a resilient infrastructure that prevents mishaps,” said Arif Mubarak, chief executive officer at Dubai Properties’ asset management arm. “An LPG piping network will further enhance the pioneering system that is automated, environmentally friendly and cost effective.”

He added that Dubai Properties is firmly committed to the safety and security of residents and tenants across its portfolio of communities.

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, chief executive officer, Enoc Group, said they place utmost importance on environment, health and safety standards, especially when it comes to customers.

“As a government-owned entity, we strive to apply international best practices to ensure the safety of individuals, communities and the environment. Our products and services are tailored to the requirements of the various industries that propel Dubai’s economic growth. We are pleased with our recent collaboration with Dubai Properties and the Dubai Civil Defence that will ensure the safety of our communities.”

Dubai Properties is implementing the system in support of Dubai Civil Defence’s ‘Home Safety Package’ launched in October last year.
