Dubai: Gone is the time when people had to physically move places to communicate, work, play, or read. Smartphones have virtually changed the scenario 360 degrees.

Every second person today is hooked on to smartphones and people can’t get enough of them.

The smartphone addicts claim that they can literally do anything that needs to be done through their phones.

“My phone is my first love. I just can’t imagine a life without my smartphone. There is nothing that I can’t do with my phone. It makes life so easy for communication, for social networking, for payment of bills, for buying stuff or reading and writing. I’m hooked on to it whole day, until I go to bed and I take it first thing in the morning,” said Ahmad Shah, a 30-year-old IT professional.

Entertainment option

Whether it is killing time or working on the go, smartphone helps people to stay entertained.

“The first thing I do in the morning when I open my eyes is to check my phone. I constantly check for WhatsApp messages, Facebook notifications, Instagram, Twitter. My phone is my source of communication with the world. I have a lot of friends in different parts of the world and I like to stay in touch with them. Also my job requires me to wait when my clients are busy, so I use the time on phone,” said Lena Sarkies, a medical representative.

Though most people use their phones mainly for communication and social media, smart phones have made keeping track of matches very easy.

“I am a football lover and I watch a lot of football on my phone on the go. I also read about football. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use my phone for other things. I like to be on social media and I’m constantly networking. It’s a good distraction from all the stress,” said Syed Hussain.

Hussain also loves to change his phones every 4-5 months.

And it’s not young people alone, who are hooked on to their phones. Abdul Qadir, a 65-year-old retired accountant says his phone is his window to the world.

“I took to smartphones only recently, but believe nobody can separate me from it now. It’s my source of information, entertainment as well as communication. Though I am not tech savvy, I am glad that I took it up and I am happy to be hooked on to it,” said Abdul Qadir, who is from Pakistan.
