Spanners set: Only buy metric sizes. Also, each spanner should have a ring end and an open end. Don't buy cheap imports made of weak metal - buy only recognised proprietary brands. They may be more expensive but will last a lifetime.
Socket set: This will include several alternative 'drivers' that fit sockets. Make sure the set has a proper sparking plug socket - this is recognisable by its longer length. Again, only buy metric versions.

For tackling wheel nuts that have been tightened too much by your friendly dealer, you can use a socket extension handle that telescopes out. By the law of physics, this gives excellent purchase and should be able to move the tightest wheel nuts.
Screwdrivers: Usually a set of four sizes will suffice but each size must be in both Philips and flat-blade types.
Pliers: There are several types of pliers including those with large ribbed jaws and those with long thin jaws for electrical use. The large pliers will have a cutting edge set into the base of the jaws. The electrical pliers should have wire trimming facility.
Wrenches: These are needed to turn nuts or bolts that are very tight or have rusted in place. You will need a wrench with adjustable jaws using a screw thread. The other type is a 'gooseneck' design that adjusts by selecting different slots in the handles. There
is also the 'Mole' type wrench that is often indispensable for tackling tough nuts.
Axle stands: When working underneath any vehicle the risk of injury is serious if the vehicle is not properly supported. Never rely only on the car's jack to support the car when working underneath. You need a pair of axle stands that will be placed under the car's chassis.

It should be strong enough to take the weight of the vehicle. One stand is just as dangerous as using just the jack. Use two stands, one on either side of the vehicle.
Trolley jack: Small trolley jacks with a lifting capacity of between 1 1/2 and 2 tons are available. The trolley jack is used to lift the vehicle high enough for the axle stands to be placed in position. When lifting a vehicle for axle stands, always make sure you are working on level ground.
Jump leads: Only buy jump leads with heavy-duty cables and with large clips at each end for fastening to battery posts or tabs. The set is usually carried in the vehicle in case of emergency.
Tool box: Having acquired a set of tools you need a clean and dry place to keep them in. Some tool kits have custom-designed slots for every piece in the set. You can buy from a selection of tool boxes from any good hardware store.

The preferred type will have a deep recess for the larger items and a lift-out tray for smaller items.
Garage storage: If you have a lockable garage, you can install a tool board on one of the walls of the garage. You may also decide to have a workbench that could be fitted with a vice if you are planning more serious work.

The majority of DIY enthusiasts will acquire the items listed above not all at once but over a planned period according to their budget. So, don't be put off by what seems to be a daunting list that would make a big hole in the monthly salary cheque.
