Melania Trump, wife of Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump, spoke at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, US July 18, 2016. Her speech went viral on social media because it appeared to have been plagiarised. A section of the speech describing the values that shaped her life strongly resembled a passage from Michelle Obama’s speech to the 2008 Democratic convention.

Here is what social media had to say:

Marvin Conley: “The Trump campaign is so incompetent they can’t even write a speech. Melania Trumps speech was stolen from a speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama. My God what is wrong with these people?”

Jani Sena: “Stealing Echoe’s words: Exactly what is funnier than a bunch of racist republicans unwittingly applauding Michelle Obama’s words? Not a damn thing.”

Gilda Samuel: “I believe in bench marking. But this here is simply copying. This needs to spread like wild fire, so people will remember where she got it from. So shameful.”

Thomerria Carter: “She just as air headed as her husband.”

Tyree Robinson: “Plagiarism at its worst. Michelle Obama wrote her own speech, whoever wrote Melania Trump’s speech needs to be held accountable big time.”

Vicente Cañaveras Lasprilla : “Copied speech spoken by an immigrant, who happens to be the wife of a politician who wants to build a wall to keep immigrants out.. okay.”

M. Melissa Caffee-Peacock: “ Trump and his whole family are crooks. Stealing again. He can’t be trusted. They will destroy America.”

Chris Childs: “Anyone else enjoying the irony that one of the passages Melania Trump plagiarised from. Michelle Obama was about the importance of working hard?”

Dennett Edwards: “I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and discover this was one crazy dream, bordering on nightmare. Where do they do this? In what world? They really insult the intelligence of Republicans with this buffoonery from both husband and wife. America, we should feel shame for this mess right here.”
