#Palmyra - Following the news of the destruction of the famous Arch of Triumph in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, Twitter users around the world united to condemn the destruction of heritage.

#Unite4Heritage — This hashtag derived from a social media campaign that was launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Director General Irina Bokova on March 28 this year to build support for the protection of heritage in areas where it is threatened by extremists. Twitter users around the world are now using it in support of Palmyra.

@UN: “Violent extremists will never be able to erase history - @UNESCO on Palmyra #Unite4Heritage”

@imanmali: “They may destroy ancient sights, but they will never change history. #Unite4Heritage”

@stengel: “Daesh’s destruction of the Arch of Triumph at #Palmyra is a destruction of history, memory, & what unites us as human beings.#Unite4Heritage”

@mz_arte: “Protecting #CulturalHeritage isn’t a luxury that can wait for better days #Unite4Heritage #Palmyra”

@MsIntervention: “This is the earliest photo ever taken of ancient #Palmyra in 1864. Sadly no more because of #Daesh cultural cleansing.”

@spyguy8080: “Those ancient stones were worth far more to mankind than all members of Daesh combined. They are the ones who need destruction!”

@LizziGoldmeier: “It’s a sad day indeed when history is wiped out before our very eyes #Daesh #Palmyra”

@RanaKabbani54: “Found a photo of #Palmyra arch taken + dated by my late father. Relieved he did not live to see its fate. We are beyond tears now.

#Syria”

@PulkitDatta: “The world is simply watching our historical heritage being “pulverised.”
