In India, two boys aged under 18 were arrested in New Delhi on Sunday for allegedly being part of a month-long gang-rape of a girl. This added to the fury of many Indians on social media, who have been advocating justice for rape victims in India. Many are horrified by the national threat of rape culture growing in the country.

Pankhuri Pathak: “A minor girl is raped by 15-20 boys in one month in the heart of the capital. The highly ‘efficient’ Delhi police under the control of Modi government. Bhakts (followers of right wing ideology in India) have totally failed to protect girls, especially minors in the city with so many girls losing their lives to the heinous crime.”

Gopal A Thakkar: “What is going on in this country? Horrible.”

Ambati Ravinder Raju: “A missing OBC women farmer (35) found raped and murdered after 5 days as police did not acted in time in Ubali village Kalmeshwar, Nagpur. Despite my efforts no administrative / politicians did not show much interest. Women farmers are not a political community.”

Margarita Yick: “Honestly if a guy want to rape you it can be anywhere, anytime, even if you wear long jeans or are covered up.”

Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma on Sunday advised tourists not to wear skirts and refrain from going out alone at night in small towns.

Girish V: “Dear Mr.Minister, it’s deplorable that you as a policy maker and a person whom the common Indian has entrusted the responsibility of creating a social evil free society, comes up with a statement like this.

I can’t even imagine that a man of such shallow thoughts is a people’s representative! If you haven’t yet realised then let me bring to your notice that rape and other crime against women happens not because of what they wear but because of the dirty mind of men. If short skirts are the cause of rape, then there should never be a rape of a woman who wears saree or salwar or a burqa! For God’s sake, we are living in a sick society where 4 year old girls are getting raped!

There are men out there who are psychopaths, try to do something about putting these men either in prison or in asylums. Please don’t cause embarrassment to men who respect women by using such irresponsible statements.

Be a role model, educate men about how to treat a woman with respect. Stop blaming women for the misguided atrocities of men. Try to portray India as a leader in women empowerment (not that they need empowerment, Indian women are capable of great things). Stop portraying India as a land of rapist men! Thanks to you, I’m ashamed to be a man.”

Tarun Mamgain: “She was wearing shorts... She must not have pleaded to rapist... She was a girl... She talks to boys - that’s why she is raped.

Woah. Incredible India. Change your thoughts to change the country.”

Satish Pawar: “The irony of current Indian government can trace your torrent activity, but not corruption. You can easily get away with a rape or murder in our country, but you go near a torrent site, you’ll be thrown in jailed for 3 years along with 3 Lakhs of fine.

Meanwhile in France, the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed to impose a nationwide ban on burkinis if he is re-elected into the post next year. He controversially labelled the swimwear, worn by some Muslim women to cover the hair and face, a “provocation”.

@jk_rowling: “So Sarkozy calls the burkini a ‘provocation.’ Whether women cover or uncover their bodies, seems we’re always, always ‘asking for it’.”
