Five years late... To mark the killing of Osama Bin Laden, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) decided to live-tweet the US raid on the Al-Qaeda founder’s compound in Pakistan as if it was happening today. Twitter users were furious over the live tweeting, calling it distasteful and stupid.
#UBLraid — This was the official hashtag used by the CIA to mark the anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death. The live-tweeting received an immense backlash as Twitter users criticised the agency for being five years late.
@CIA: “To mark the 5th anniversary of the Usama Bin Ladin operation in Abbottabad we will tweet the raid as if it were happening today. #UBLRaid”
@Vghandi: “@CIA how many American lives, years and dollars did it take to catch this old man, anyway?”
@AzTheBaz: “@CIA At least Japan had the decency to only attack a military target in Pearl Harbour and not civilian towns like the US did.”
@DazeEnd: “This is utterly tasteless. If @CIA weren’t a verified account I would have thought it was a parody.”
@SuibhneGeilt1: “@CIA Is there an intern about to be fired on Monday over this? A fair stupid idea!”
@BeardedSkeptic: “I foresee a whole series of live-tweeted “enhanced interrogation” sessions, drone strikes, and other various murders. Good job, @CIA’
@claymad122: “@CIA Are we tweeting Hiroshima on August 6th, too? Or is that in bad taste? #Badidea #UBLRaid #useyourbrain”
@lindseymysse: “@CIA Which version? The one you told us five years ago or the real one?”
@MissElllly: “@CIA What is wrong with you people — stop glorifying murder! #Stayclassy #UBLRaid How many died to get to this ‘raid’? #Reallife”
@SamuelBrobert: “@CIA Instead, might this be a good opportunity for a discussion on the efficacy of decapitation strikes against terrorist networks?”
psy_aviah: “@CIA Come on, really? Has this solved any #RealWorldProblems? Try tweeting about something #relevant or #backgroundhistory — this is just #sensation”
@RichieOffish: “@CIA It’s ‘Osama’ not ‘Usama’.”
@KKhanMarwat: “@CIA “and then we threw the body in the sea” would be the funniest part of it. Waiting for it. #OBLRaid”
@BlueDream2008: “@CIA, Where’s his body by the way? Is it really at sea, or is he in Nevada playing slot machines?”
