The Indian judiciary which is supposed to one of the best functioning systems in the world, seems to be in a terrible disarray. Four senior judges in the Supreme Court recently complained about the lack of tranparency on the part of the Chief Justice and went public, speaking about it boldly to the social media. It has affected the credibility of the Indian judiciary and the masses are fast losing their faith in the functioning of the country’s judiciary and its justice.

It can never be ‘business as usual’ any more and the common man is completely confused. However, the legal luminaries hope that all judges along with the Chief Justice will rise to the occasion and resolve the issue of transparency in an amicable way.
Some called it a ‘black day’ for the judiciary. Some others say that the issue can be resolved through true dialogue, deliberation and consensus. The four judges of the Supreme Court complained about the credibility of the Chief Justice. There must have been compelling reasons for them to take such a serious step of holding a press conference and turning to social media expressing their strong views in a strong manner.

But opinions are divided. Some say that that the judges should have exercised more caution before holding the press conference.

A legal luminary Justice Venugopal has said that the justices as well as the Chief Justice should have acted in a ‘statenmanlike manner” to retain tranparency of the judiciary.

It is high time the Indian judiciary and its justices acted in a more mature manner both to establish their rights and also to retain the tranparency of the entire legal system.
