Stop the cycle

Please stop showing these images (‘Latest video shows Daesh-style execution by drowning’, Gulf News, June 23). The newspaper is giving airtime to real people being murdered. In what way is that right? These horrific, deliberately shocking and visual communications are designed for social media and the internet. If Gulf News and other media outlets stop showing them, greatly reducing their airtime, then they are telling Daesh that we will not be drawn into their sick propaganda. I am not naive enough to believe this will stop them killing people, but at least I hope they will do so in a more humane, less dramatic and torturous way.

Don’t create focus

Why is Gulf News promoting them? You should be ashamed to post such an article! Show some humanity and remove this post.

Insensitive

Why on earth is Gulf News showing the images of this? Can you not think of family members that may see these images? These being the last ever pictures of their loved ones. Seriously out of order and totally inappropriate.

This happened. We cannot desensitise it and make it go away. It is our job to report the news and that includes events that are ugly and inhumane. Just ignoring it, and hiding those parts that are most unpalatable, is not going to make anyone stop. Quite the reverse.

If there is outrage, if societies around the world react in disgust, it may prevent other impressionable young men and women signing up to be the latest Daesh recruits. Note: These images have been widely circulated across media outlets and featured widely in news broadcasts. Publishing an image does not constitute advertising and nor does it explain or condone. It is very hard to understand how any of these images can be seen by anyone as promotional.
