Yes, to some extent we are dependent on cell phones (“Facebook Debate: Have phones become a necessity in today’s world?”, Gulf News, March 11). As most information is online and as people cannot carry their computers everywhere, phones are compact PC’s that help people gain essential information through various social media platforms and applications. Not to forget, communication is one of the main reasons why a phone is important. Recently, phones are being used to capture moments and share it with loved ones. So yes, it is important. However, there are drawbacks as the internet is an open place where bad and good are in the form of a cocktail. So it is up to people to be careful and to make sure of the information they are looking at or consuming.

Way too dependent
I think everyone is very dependent on their cell phones. No one has the time to meet people and make an effort. In a way, cell phones help limit personal interactions. They allow people to sit behind a screen and live their lives. People are so invested in technology that they have forgotten what the real world looks like. I understand that it is informative and there is a lot that we tend to lean through social media but that does not mean we can spend our entire lives on our devices.

Too much time spent
I hate our dependency on it. My girlfriend is on her phone the whole day! She keeps taking selfies and says it’s for me. It’s been two years and I have never received those selfies. She also keeps talking on the phone with someone. When I asked her who it was, she said she was planning my birthday with a friend. The weird thing is, I never got a birthday surprise.

Absolutely! The technology of mobile phones did better the lives of people. It helps us stay connected. But being addicted to it, beyond the necessity, is a bane, be it mobile phones or any other device.

The queen of hearts
In her death, Indian actress Sridevi conquered all hearts in India (“Sridevi’s family: ‘Let us grieve in peace’”, Gulf News, March 1). We had always admired her for her acting, dancing and histrionics. However, the spontaneous outpouring of grief at her sudden departure, made her the queen of all hearts in India. Never before have I seen such anguish at the death of an artist. She was not a political leader, but she ruled the sentiments of those who loved art. A whole nation held its breath when the police was reviewing the case of her death. Everyone sighed in relief when the case was closed. Congratulations to the government and the Mumbai police for giving her a dignified state send-off with the national flag wrapped around her mortal remains. She deserved the national honour and salute. As the Amul butter hoarding summed it up, she was truly ‘Mrs. India’. A national icon of India has gone away. Her memory and honour will inspire her daughters and all girls in India to achieve their full potential.

Karma at its best
There is an old saying that goes: ‘As you sow, so shall you reap’, and this is exactly what has happened in the case of Karti Chidambaram, son of former Indian finance minister P. Chidambaram (“Karti Chidambaram arrested in INX media case”, Gulf News, March 1). In fact during the United Province Alliance (UPA) tenures, there have been umpteen such cases unearthed against leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawathi, Lalu Prasad Yadav and even Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time, to unsettle their political career. At that time the Congress never thought those acts as vindictive and preached that let the law take its course. Then why do they feel like this case against Chidambaram was vindictive? Can’t they wait for the law to take its own course, as all of them preach to abide by the laws of our country? Let the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquire and if they think he is guilty, he has to face the music. Thankfully, there was no leakage of this news, like it has happened previously, otherwise he too would not have returned to India from his foreign trip!

Roger Federer, the legend
Congratulations to tennis legend, Roger Federer, for becoming the most decorated winner in the history of Laureus World Sports Award, after his twin honours, his sixth, which includes the Sportsman and Comeback titles at the 18th Edition of the prestigious award ceremony. He richly deserved these honours as it may be very difficult for any sports person to break his records in the near future. We wish him the best in the coming tournaments too to enable him to retain his title ranking for at least another year or so.
