Why don’t people drive safely?

Rest in peace, Dr Moza Sultan Al Kaabi, who died in a tragic road accident (‘First female Emirati orthopaedic surgeon dies in road accident’, Gulf News, August 23). She was a young woman in a very noble profession, who paid the price of some unruly driver. I am unable to understand why people don’t drive safely. With an accident, the dream of a young woman died as well as the hopes of her parents. This is very sad, indeed.

A loss to community

May God give patience to her family, relatives and friends as well as her parents. May God be pleased with her and grant her a place in heaven. It is really sad to hear that this has happened with a genius, such as herself. I will pray for her.

Al Kaabi was an inspiration

This is very sad and tragic news. The demise of Al Kaabi is a loss for the entire country. She was still quite young and had her whole life ahead of her. She had a promising career as well. My sincere condolences go out to her family. She will always remain an inspiration to women across the region and shall be remembered for her outstanding achievements and her kindness.

Surpassed many obstacles

This is so sad and such a waste! She has been through many obstacles to make it to where she was, for sure. Rest in peace, I hope for there to be more young women who will follow in her footsteps.

A loss for humanity

The loss of an intellectual is the saddest thing for humanity in my opinion. Although, I do believe that every soul has its own value.

Much attention on accident

Of course, I wish her peace, but I wish that other issues were able to receive this much publicity. It seems that the media sheds so much light on certain professional individuals, but in reality, this kind of accident happens to a lot of people everywhere. I don’t understand why this is so.

Protecting Nature

The pictures of glaciers and the wilderness in Alaska shows that Mother Earth is so beautiful (‘Reader picture essay: A song of ice and snow in the Alaskan wilderness’, Gulf News, August 24). Please let us save it. Lets all do our part in protecting it for the future generations.

Going North

I would love to see Alaska. The landscapes are beautiful and so different from other parts of the world. The wildlife would be intimidating though, I think. Grizzly bears, mountain lions, wolves… . These are big predators if you were thinking of going camping. However, I suppose with the proper equipment, preparation and know-how, you would be safe. I would like to go in the summer when there is hardly any darkness. Can you imagine only 30 minutes of night? Make sure to pack your eye mask!

Best of all worlds

Sometimes I wish that the UAE was green like this. These pictures look so green and so natural with temperature not more than 25 degree Celsius throughout the year. Can you imagine if we could have that here?

Rent increase, maintenance decrease

Nowadays, it seems that few landlords do any maintainence (‘Nearly all tenants in Dubai face maintenance issues’, Gulf News, August 24). In the past, rents were cheaper and maintainence was top notch. But, for some reason, with the increasings rents in the past five years, maintenance has become non-existent.

Not following contract

The issues residents are facing with maintenance is business as usual these days! Some of the landlords are just wanting money from their investment, but after that nobody should disturb them. Even if it is part of their duty in the contract!

Why should I paint?

One real estate company wants me to pay for paint and other standard maintenance work for the apartment I vacated. Am I suppose to pay for paint so the new tenant can move in? I didn’t change the color. I didn’t put wallpaper on the walls. In the entire five years I lived in the apartment, the real estate company never painted once, yet every year since 2013 onwards rent was increased.

Important to know laws

In response to Mr Dav D., only if you have changed the original colour or put up wallpaper should you have to paint it again. Of course, this is if the landlord has been giving your apartment paint service upon renewal or may be once in two years, at the time you were residing in the apartment. This is the norm I guess. Better check with the authorities!

However, unless you caused damage to the walls, they should not ask you to pay for it to my knowledge. In my building, the authorities have put notices regarding the rights of tenants. If while vacating they had checked and no damages were reported, they should not ask for it. One of my landlords once was deducting my deposit money for no reason. I fought with him and told him I would put up a case against him. He refunded the money in full. It worked for me. If I were you, I would get a copy of the rules and be adamant.

Will I be charged?

I’m worried about my security deposit when I eventually leave my building. The air conditioning vent in my apartment experienced condensation with the humidity of the summer and it has caused damage to the drywall. It’s not significant damage, but it may be enough to take my security deposit from me when I eventually move out.

Since the damage is from the air conditioner, shouldn’t that be the responsibility of the landlord? It was frustrating enough that the vents needed to be cleaned and serviced well before I moved in. It meant that cold air output was completely inefficient, and I’m sure I lost a substantial amount of money in utilities considering how warm my apartment was.

Can’t compare taxation to West

The article on the pros and cons of taxation in the UAE is not really a fair article (‘The pros and cons before UAE gets into VAT mode’, Gulf News, August 23). The author compares the situation of the UAE with the tax rates of the West. For example, he says the US taxes consumers 18 cents per gallon on oil. He’s forgetting to compare other factors such as the size of the economy of the two countries. Compare the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and you will understand my point.

He doesn’t talk about the competition from neighbouring economies. There’s no way that businesses will accept taxes without raising prices and they won’t raise salaries while operational expenses rise. Inflation will be inevitable.
