Wait and watch

Regarding the global laptop ban, earlier, a few airlines were allowing laptops on flights and this was appreciated by many frequent travellers (“Global laptop ban: What’s the reason and what you can do if it becomes mandatory”, Gulf News, October 20). Now, the recent proposal for banning laptops along with baggage from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the US is the latest development. This proposal may not be a welcome one for regular travellers, professionals and others, however, due to safety and technical reasons the FAA is proposing this measure and we will have to wait and see. My opinion is that if the US can adopt any other security measures in airports and if it is feasible, then it should be considered. In today’s information technology age, people will be fish out of water if their personal laptops cannot be carried. At the same time, more safety for the passengers is also needed. I hope things will take a better shape in the coming days.

Community service

Giving a fine of Dh800 and four black points is nothing (“Do this and get slapped a Dh800 fine, 4 black points”, Gulf News, October 22). It ought to be more than that. The defaulter should be given one day of community service, which can include cleaning the roads adjacent to his place of residence. This will do the trick.

Stay fit and have fun

I signed up for The Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30 as soon as it was announced (“Opening weekend of Dubai Fitness Challenge draws in 25,000”, Gulf News, October 23). Though I do not have a regular and disciplined exercising routine, this challenge was an inspiration to motivate me to stay fit and also have fun during the journey. I have successfully completed two days of the challenge. I also participated in the Global Yoga Mala, yesterday. It was fun doing yoga with thousands of people. It was a delightful sight to see the old and the young exercising together. I am tracking my daily progress using the app created for this challenge. I am determined to complete the challenge, and I’m hoping that this will become a habit even after 30 days. Have fun and stay fit!

Highway not the place

People should stop pulling over for prayers (“4 killed, 12 injured in Dubai traffic accidents”, Gulf News, October 22). There are mosques in every area. People should be patient and drive for ten more minutes and pray in a safe environment. When will people understand that it’s a highway?

Accidents happen

It was a group not a crowd. The tyre burst, and you don’t need to be speeding for that to happen. There really should be a law against pulling over on a major road to pray. The shoulder is for emergency situations. No, I am not blaming the victims.

Firecrackers cause more damage

Many people are not aware of the harmful effects of firecrackers (“Watch: Fireworks mark Diwali in UAE”, Gulf News, October 20). Those who stay away from using fire crackers have equal rights to live in a calm and clean environment. Actually, there is no relationship between the festival of Diwali and crackers as history shows. According to reports, in Mumbai, the air quality is the worst this year, despite fireworks being used less as compared to last year’s celebrations. Dogs are also affected as they are very sensitive to the sound and cannot escape it. Air quality is becoming poor, the sound that crackers make affects animals and human beings alike. Most of the people using fire crackers do so out of ignorance. So proper awareness together with strict enforcement of law will ensure a healthy living environment.

War of politics

The dirty political and economic war against Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte is taking the country’s inflation to a high and the cost of living is increasing, so people feel the pinch and have started protesting against him and his government (“Fierce firefight as Philippines’ toughest urban war down to last building”, Gulf News, October 23). This is due to his new positive political approach toward Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa (BRICS) nations, thus drifting away from the US. Stay calm and do not fall into conspiracies.
