Values are the most important

I hope that while strengthening the level of education, the Ministry of Education will also stress on encouraging good values among the current generation, regardless of whether they are in private or public schools (“UAE adopts new Emirati School Model”, Gulf News, September 3). Disrespecting adults and teachers should not be tolerated. Values should be given more emphasis.

No bullying teachers

Parents shouldn’t be allowed to bully teachers when they are trying to discipline the students. Schools encourage the disrespect of teachers by siding with the bully’s parents, just to ensure their commercial transactions are not at risk.

Don’t blame the road

There’s no such thing as a dangerous road, really (“Five most dangerous Dubai Roads in 2017”, Gulf News, September 3). It’s all because of the drivers who think they are the next Lewis Hamilton and don’t know the rules, in most cases.

Two main issues

The authorities need to do something about two dangerous factors, which I observe on a daily basis. Large commercial vehicle drivers do not keep to the right lane, neither do private vehicles that travel below the 120km/h speed limit. If these two issues are fixed and monitored, I feel accident rates will drop dramatically.

Plan ahead

I think people can expect traffic congestion on roads when there are school buses involved, or parents dropping off children (“Dubai school bus trips account for 13% during morning rush hour”, Gulf News, September 4). People need to leave 15 to 20 minutes earlier, or more!

Don’t blame buses

In the mornings, people drive quite rashly. Drivers do not consider the lives they are endangering when they turn or change lanes without prior warning. I think school buses do cause traffic but it is something that can’t be helped. People should plan their journeys better in order to reach their destination on time, and avoid speeding in case they are late.

Measures for safe driving

Awareness campaigns should be conducted more frequently. People should be encouraged to use their indicators. A safety tip every day, via traffic updates on the radio, would also go a long way.

Good move from Indian government

The recent cabinet reshuffle of the National Democratic Alliance in India has brought some prominent new faces, and some old ones to the new portfolio (“Sitharaman becomes India’s first full-time woman Defence Min”, Gulf News, September 3). Bringing former commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the Defence Ministry shows the confidence Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has in Sitharaman. Sushma Swaraj proved her mettle in Modi’s cabinet and certainly, the new defence minister will prove her mettle too. This new reshuffle has sent an indirect signal that those who do not deliver will have no place in Modi’s cabinet. Good gesture by the Indian Prime Minister.

Terrible state

This is heart-breaking footage indeed (“UN must step in to prevent Syria horrors”, Gulf News, September 1). Greed seems to rule the world as some heads of state don’t want to give up their power. They would rather kill innocent children and slaughter millions.

Do something

So many Muslims have been killed in Syria and there has not been enough action from the western world about this bloody massacre. Innocent people are being killed and the United Nations and other human rights activists are seemingly silent. No one is speaking up and acting against this terrorism. The Myanmar military have also killed hundreds of Rohingya Muslims, till today.

Evolving with time

Everyone is familiar with Leonardo DiCaprio’s versatility when it comes to movie characters (“Leonardo DiCaprio the new ‘Joker’?”, Gulf News, September 2). We have seen him evolve. He’s played characters like Jack Dawson in Titanic in 1997 and Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. They were both very different roles and movie genres, but were flawlessly executed by the same person. He is everyone’s favourite and I’m sure it will be a delight to watch him in a new role.

High hopes

Leonardo DiCaprio is a fantastic actor and has done some pretty amazing roles. He has many feathers in his cap and I think this role will be another one. The Joker is a wild character and has a lot of room for actors to improvise. Even though DiCaprio is very poised and reserved in his acting, seeing him in such an avatar would be very interesting. I loved Suicide Squad and I think Jared Leto did a phenomenal job. I wonder how he would prepare himself for the part. I’m looking forward to this.
