The abuse of children needs to stop

It is pathetic and shocking to know that 547 boys at a German choir school suffered sexual or physical abuse during the years 1945 to the early 1990s (‘At least 547 abuse cases at German choir school’, Gulf News, July 19). Many of the victims remembered their choir school as the worst place in their life. Reports say George Ratzinger, who was the head of the Bavarian choir from 1964 to 1994, is the elder brother of former Pope Benedict. It is sad to know that this scandal has happened in the southern state of Bavaria, the hometown of the former Pope.

I think such abuse in Catholic churches in Europe have resulted in people being driven away from the church. Scandals in the Catholic church have been reported in the US, Austria and Ireland. Pope Francis has openly made apologies recently. We hope the culprits will be booked and the victims will get justice and be compensated. Steps should be taken by the Catholic church to ensure this is not repeated anywhere in the world.

A serious knock

Congratulations to Mithali Raj and her team for entering the finals of the Cricket World Cup 2017. It was a remarkable recovery by India’s team, especially the hurricane knock of Harmanpreet Kaur. Her knock took us back to the 1983 World Cup, when Kapil Dev’s unbeaten century bailed out the team from disaster and went on to surprise the world by winning the title. While we were just expecting a score of 230, Kaur had different plans — to take the team to a winning total of 281. We wish the team all the best in the future.

Did he pick this date?

Chester Bennington is one of my music heroes (‘Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington reported to have committed suicide’, Gulf News, July 21). Isn’t it creepy that Bennington was born on March 20 and died on July 20? Bennington and Chris Cornell (of the band Audioslave) were best friends. They even performed live together. Cornell’s birthday was July 20. When Cornell died, Bennington wrote a letter for him. Both died by committing suicide. I wonder if Bennington committed suicide on that day on purpose. Linkin Park will never be the same again.

He helped Pakistan

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is absolutely right, because he is the one who has brought the Pakistani economy back on track (‘Pakistan PM warns his opponents not to test his patience’, Gulf News, July 21). The opposition parties are just spewing propaganda against him for nothing. Go ahead, we are with you, Sharif.

Should be in prison

If Pakistan was some other country, where law and order was by the book, Sharif would have been in prison a long time ago as a traitor. He has already been proven guilty and was made out to be a liar during the Panama papers revelation.

A thief

Sharif has been certified as a corrupt leader from the highest court, the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He was caught red-handed, thanks to the Panama papers. I am sorry and ashamed to call him a prime minister.

No better option

Most of Pakistan’s political parties and leaders are not competent enough to run the country based on their merit, including Imran Khan. If Sharif is not guilty of corruption, then history shows that he is the best so far, among all leaders. Khan has moulded the nation in a direction and so far, he has done nothing in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to be proud of, and he has no clear vision of what he can do for Pakistan, except the building of cancer hospitals. Further, his politics are biased around Sharif only.

The biggest mistake Sharif made, is that he did not bring talent to the top, so that they can establish better enforcement and monitoring of the system.
