We are just a speck in the universe

There have been all too many comments about the first walk on the moon, with people saying that it was fake or that it was a conspiracy — it makes my head hurt (‘Today in history: US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin take first walk on the moon’, Gulf News, July 20)! There were seven lunar landing missions between 1969 and 1972, with Apollo 13, of course, failing. People justify this conspiracy by asking why we haven’t gone back. The reason we haven’t been back, is that there simply isn’t any point! Instead, the money was used for shuttle missions and the International Space Station, as well as sending probes to other planets in our solar system and beyond. People need to stop thinking ‘small’. We are just a blip in this massive universe, which is far too vast for anyone to really comprehend.

Strong creations of God

I would like to tell women that they are the best of God’s creations, in many ways (‘Readers views: For most women, it’s still a man’s world’, Gulf News, July 19). The destiny of women depends upon their choices, their options, their reservations and their judgment. Women are mentally strong and one day, I think we will see a woman’s world, not a man’s world! Personally, I respect women and never think I am superior to them.

Can’t compare genders

I don’t think that women are living in a man’s world, not at all! Those who are still thinking like that, are actually comparing men and women, when the truth is, they are completely different. Men are men and women are women. Every form has a different role, but in careers, I think that women are often ahead of men, due to their deep understanding.

Thankfully, treated as an equal

I am not going to lie here. Yes, I think it is evident that women have to live in a man’s world. But, it often depends on the situation. I am so glad that I don’t experience this in my job. So far, so good.

Making progress against evil

We need to find a way to get rid of all terrorists (‘Daesh attack kills 115 in Iraq’s Diyala province’, Gulf News, July 19). They deserve death, which is the greatest punishment one can give. There is no relation between terrorism and Islam. Only those with evil in their hearts are using the name of Islam to do such vile things. I think people are now starting to understand who is truly behind the scene.

Spread peace on Earth

These horrible people are continuing to make chaos on Earth! The people who want fame and glory through such terrible means should realise that our time in the world is so transient. Why not let everybody spend life in peace? Isn’t this logical?

Ancient mosque in Bangladesh

I think it is interesting to see this mosque in India, but also, a couple years ago, a village in Northern Bangladesh discovered the remains of a mosque believed to have been built in the seventh century (‘Kodungallur mosque, India’s first, was built by Prophet’s companion’, Gulf News, July 20). When it was initially found, they saw ancient treasures and artefacts of Islamic history, like a stone with Quranic scriptures, buried underground. Articles on the topic say that this could be the oldest mosque in South Asia!

Religious tourism

I think that such religious sites should be promoted by the Indian government. It could be a place for tourism and promote awareness.

Online shopping helpful in heat

I find it interesting that grocery shopping over the phone or online have done so well in the UAE (‘Online grocery shopping makes residents’ lives easier’, Gulf News, July 20). Back in my home country, these methods were tried out by companies but it was generally not very popular, once the hype wore down. I think people like to go to the grocery store and pick out the best available produce and see their purchases before it’s made.

I wonder if the intensely hot climate plays a role in the success of these online shopping businesses. Many grocery stores don’t deliver, but it can seem too tiresome to hull large quantities of groceries home when it is so hot outside!

Idea in its infancy

Online shopping is still in its introductory stage in the UAE, mainly due to the absence of major international retailers. The hypermarkets here give importance to shopping at their premises. Online shopping will reduce crowds inside malls as well as vehicles outside, in terms of traffic and parking.

Ask questions, learn answers

It was interesting to read the article about a man conducting his own last rites in India, a tradition that is usually carried out by one’s children (‘Man conducts his own last rites for a berth in heaven’, Gulf News, July 20). Many people, through Gulf News’ Facebook page comments, have said that this seems odd, but Hinduism is a very old religion and I think that we must respect all traditions in any religion. If some rituals look strange or unusual to anyone, it’s better to ask someone of that religion, how it became a ritual. They will explain it to you and you will probably not think of it afterwards as something odd.

Be wary of pop ups

When it comes to the virus scam going around for iPhones, it’s important that we are clever and don’t believe in any advertisements that pop up on our phones or computers (‘How to save your iPhone from a Dh300 virus scam’, Gulf News, July 17). As long you have an antivirus program, you don’t have to be afraid.

Close applications

I don’t think it’s always possible to follow these instructions offered in the article. If one’s device is frozen, just how on Earth can you go to the settings and turn on airplane mode? I experienced this problem. So, I just double pressed the home button, swiped up to close the Safari application and then just re-launched it.

Trick programs

There are some really scary scams that are able to retrieve our private information. There’s a virus for Mac computers that makes you think it’s pre-installed software that wants to clean up your computer, but it’s just a nasty virus! Anyone new to Apple products might fall victim to that scam. I’ve never had any iPhone scam — or so I think! I’m just very careful with any advertisements or anything that wants to access to my device. Just don’t go there, don’t click on anything of the sort.

Saving money is safest

Bank savings have always been the safest means of saving for the middle-income populace, for a long time now (‘Biggest drop in gold could lead to buying frenzy in UAE’, Gulf News, July 21). Gold, although a safe deal, causes us to suffer much loss when it is time to exchange it for cash, in terms of charges, lack of purity and so forth. But I always feel the current generation has been smart enough to diversify investments into real estate, bonds and the stock market. As far as money in this region is concerned, unless you have someone really close to you to find out the right mode of investment at the grassroots level, be it in real estate, business or bonds, it’s best left alone in banks. This became evident to me, after several bitter experiences of trying to invest in land and elsewhere. I wish the authorities could come up with options for better utilisation of foreign remittances for the benefit of both the expatriates and the country.
