Making India better with public art

It was a brilliant innovative idea by a group of non-governmental organisations (NGO) to beautify Borivali and Khar railway stations in Mumbai, India (‘Art takes pain out of train journeys’, Gulf News, January 30). It’s inspiring to see the vibrant colours and themes on the walls of railway stations and hats off to the students and youth who participated along with Making a Difference organisation, which took the initiative.

Cleaning public places and making it attractive with art work and bright colours with the participation of students and youth should set an example for others as well. This can be set as an example to other stations all over the country. The new government’s vision for the Clean India Initiative should get more momentum. Let our youth take this as a challenge and spread awareness throughout India. Let us clean our surroundings and take this as our new task.

Road transformations

I think it’s great that the speed limit has been raised, especially with the plan being to make Jumeriah Beach Road go one way and Al Wasl Road go the other way (‘Umm Suqeim Road speed limit raised to 90km/h’, Gulf News, February 1). Two mini highways, one in each direction.

Depicting a small town

The video by Coldplay beautifully depicts the spirituality and simplicity of the lives in a small town (‘Coldplay’s Indian video causes controversy online’, Gulf News, February 1). Just one slice of life there, amidst many. I think it’s gorgeous. What I find offensive is Beyonce ruining every single traditional outfit!

Societal issue

I loved the images and the cinematography. I think the video shows India as a vibrant colourful country, full of people who embrace life with passion. I could only suggest they show a different model with darker skin, as I detest the obsession people have with “the fairer your skin, the more beautiful you are”.

Inappropriate

I can’t stop thinking that Beyonce ruined the music video. I was thinking Sasha Fierce in a peaceful music video.

Something needs to happen

This is the latest threat in Colombia. The World Health Organisation (WHO) should do something immediately ‘2,100 pregnant women infected with Zika virus in Colombia’, Gulf News, February 1), and pharmaceutical companies should invent some new medicines to control this.

Why is this a problem?

Would Michael Jackson actually have a problem with a white man playing him (‘Michael Jackson played by a white man: The internet is angry’, Gulf News, January 30)? He tried to become white over the course of his life. Want to stop racism? Stop talking about it.

Never satisfied

Why not? People on the internet are never satisfied. What do they want? A black man transformed into a white man, exactly like Jackson?

The real issue

This is a short term solution to their problems (‘Sharjah father-of-two left brain-damaged’, Gulf News, January 31). What did this man achieve after spending 38 years in this company? His company should have supported him a lot till his end and continued to support his family.

Bless them

I am in awe by the way a lot of people here have the heart to help this man’s family. May God bless them abundantly.

Brings tears to my eyes

Such stories bring tears to my eyes, I am sometimes forced to judge, yet God stops me from doing so (‘Girl, 7, forced into sex act for cookies: UN’, Gulf News, January 31). Poor girls, may God remember and put us on the same line with others to help as much as we can!

They aren’t human

You have to be an especially sick person to sexually attack a child. May God not have mercy on these types of horrible excuses for human beings.

Untrusting

There is so little known about what those so-called peace keepers are doing to our sisters out there! And I always say it’s one reason why such wars never get finished.

Gadgets stop us sleeping

Back in the 1980s, you did not have as many electronic gadgets as you have today that make you work non-stop. Back then you had a lot of physical movement, which helped a person get a lot of sleep. These days the mental stress is more than the physical and therefore getting sleep is hard even though you need it more now to relax your mind.

Big opportunities for India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a born economist (‘India stocks: Interest rates, budget eyed’, Gulf News, January 31). On May 2014, when Modi had come into power, he inherited an economy that was brought to the edge of ruin, by the former government. He soon launched many campaigns to fuel the economic growth.

Modi has also met the Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, and as per the conditions of the agreement, Google would initiate free WiFi in the most significant railway stations in India. The benefits of this incentive would be accrued to those one billion people in India who still are deprived of this facility and would also facilitate the ‘Digitalisation of India’.

All these initiatives has led the economy to grow at a rate of 7.75 per cent, dethroning China as the world’s fastest growing economy. The latter, however, continues to grow at a decent rate of 6.8 per cent and is estimated to grow at the same, as per the recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) predictions.

Currently, Modi has proposed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill, which is aimed to shoot up government revenues and offer a plethora of opportunities to the Indian people and invest in infrastructural and other public facilities. Despite the stagnation of the same due to reservations of the Congress and with the chaotic National Herald case, the GST bill could be a big leap for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to reform the Indian economy.
