Make education affordable

As parents, you want to give the best to your child and try to do more than what your parents did for you (“UAE parents need close to Dh1 million per child to cover education costs”, Gulf News, August 17). When you start planning a life for your child, the first thing you think about is education. You want to send your child to the best school and provide the best education. Both parents work hard to pay the fees, but everything is becoming so expensive, such as house rent, groceries and utilities. Education should not be considered a business and should be affordable, accessible and available to all. Parents spend their lives just to save money and pay for school fees and university. There should be a unified curriculum for all schools. Education creates good citizens. It opens up new horizons. It inculcates good morals. But our income is not increasing, while school fees are rising. Should I enjoy my life or save money for my child’s future?

Mixed feelings

We have all been on tenterhooks for the past few days (“UAE students score high in A level results”, Gulf News, August 18). The long wait was gnawing at us and we didn’t know what to expect. The A-level results day was one of the most pivotal days in the academic calendar. Since the whole system of A-levels had changed, the papers and the marking scheme had, too. My daughter scored really well and while we were not expecting anything less, we were ecstatic. However, I’m sad that I will have to say goodbye to our little one. No more parent-teacher meetings, dropping off physical education (PE) kits, forgotten lunch boxes, daily pickups and ice cream treats. Although I knew this was coming, it’s hard to believe that it has all come to an end. We will begin a new phase of our lives. It’s a new phase for my daughter, especially, as she steps out into the world.

Sad news

It was disheartening to read that Spain was hit by a second car rampage, after the first attack killed 13 (“Suspects killed in second Spain attack”, Gulf News, August 19). The brutal attack by terrorists is highly condemned. Today, the entire globe is witnessing terror attacks and this is unacceptable. It is time the international community joined hands and eradicated this menace. Will they come together and make people’s safety a priority?

Ensure security

My sincere condolences to all victims, especially my Pakistani brothers (“Pakistanis, Filipinos among victims of Barcelona van terror attacks”, Gulf News, August 19). The Pakistan foreign office must warn Spanish authorities to ensure the safety and security of Pakistani citizens in their country.

Road rage kills

I feel there is nothing that kills people in the UAE, like road accidents (“Motorist killed in horrific crash on Emirates Road”, Gulf News, August 18). No matter how many warnings are put out for motorists, many never take heed of them. They would rather break road safety rules and regulations, than pay attention to their safety and the safety of those around them. If you are a thrill-seeker, you will never live long. Speed kills, driving while being distracted kills, phones kill, driving under the influence of alcohol kills, stunt driving kills and everything kills if you lose concentration and fail to pay attention to your surroundings.

Devine intervention

Last time, the Almighty saved me when I was on the road. I was driving at a high speed and saw that a car had stopped along the hard shoulder, with its hazard lights on. I am always vigilant and expect the unexpected. When I got closer to the car, the motorist started driving and suddenly changed lanes. I had only a second to react. The difficult thing was I couldn’t change to the lane on my left as there was another vehicle there, but luckily, I managed to escape. On these roads, we can’t even blink. Be vigilant, be safe and avoid mobile phones.

Watch out

I had an accident in Dubai a few days ago. The motorist in front of us suddenly turned left, as she was about to miss the exit. My husband managed to stop our car, but the vehicle behind us was moving too fast and the motorist was unable to stop in time. Good thing my husband and I, being five months-pregnant, were safe. People need to be more vigilant on the road and pay attention to the exits, instead of changing lanes at the last minute.
