Make an example of criminals

A few days ago, Pakistani media revealed a shocking child abuse scandal in the Punjab province, that has left the whole nation in disbelief and rage (“Panel formed to probe Pakistan child sex abuse scandal”, Gulf News, August 12). Much is being said and discussed, especially by politicians, leaders and the so-called clergy, mainly to promote their own self-interest in this matter. Nothing is going to be done by statements alone. They should close their eyes for a moment and visualise the horrors those children must have endured at the hands of those monsters, for so long. Swift line of action must be adopted and implemented and the harshest form of punishment meted out, to those who are responsible for such a heinous crime. It is my opinion that the matter has to be taken up by the masses in Pakistan, the parents and the victims. They must raise their voice and put pressure on the government to bring these evil-doers to justice, and give exemplary punishment to each one of those involved, including the police force and others. They should be made an example of, so such incidents do not rear their ugly head again, and all crimes against women and children cease. The Pakistani government should provide each of the victims monetary assistance to rebuild their shattered lives. They must be rehabilitated and they, along with their parents and guardians, must be given access to proper counselling and long term psychiatric treatment, to be able to deal with the emotional scars, so that they can lead as normal a life as possible.

What is the point?

The report about the child abuse scandal in Pakistan was horrifying. Reading accounts from mothers whose children were victims, was not easy. And all the Pakistani Prime Minister did, was express “extreme sadness”. Well, I am also really sad, but I am not in charge. Being in charge brings a lot of responsibility. Leading a nation isn’t just about being sad when something bad happens, it requires you to take immediate action against such atrocities. According to reports, 130 video clips containing abuse were found, and there could be more. There are also suggestions of a politically influenced cover-up. Countless children have suffered at the hands of power-hungry people. This isn’t something that we wish to see in the so-called ‘Naya (new) Pakistan’. As a Pakistani, I believe our government needs to take stern steps towards ensuring the safety of its citizens. Otherwise, there is no point of having them in power.

An alarming number

I write to express grave concern over the abuse of children in a Pakistani town. It is one of the most horrible and gruesome incidents I have heard of lately. This scam has brought shame to the entire nation. My heart bleeds for the children who were abused. I am sure there are several other cases that have not surfaced due to the dichotomous society. The scandal, allegedly involving hundreds of victims, is due to the country’s lack of concentration on children. The abused children would live with guilt and disgrace, and most likely blame themselves for what happened. According to reports in Pakistani media, some 380 children, including girls, have been sexually abused since 2009 in this specific town, but neither has any victim nor any family reported the crimes. There is no strong child protection policy framed by the government. I suggest that the authorities establish a department or personally deal with such cases.

Respect independence

India marked its Independence Day yesterday, August 15. This is a very important day in the history of India, as 68 years ago, the nation made a historic change. It was a time when the whole nation came forward, to sacrifice every strand of strength it had to pay, for its freedom. We all know that independence is not free. It took years of efforts and other movements by national freedom fighters to attain liberty. The fresh air of freedom that the nation breathes today is nothing but the fruit of their sacrifice and hard work. The independence attained, must be safeguarded by our unity and integrity. The freedom of emotions and a feeling of patriotism understood by the heart, reminds us of our duties towards our homeland.

Our civic responsibility

We marked the International Youth Day on August 12, and this year, the theme was based on civic engagement. I, as a young global citizen, strongly believe that it is necessary for young people today to participate in the community, in order to improve conditions for others or to help shape the community’s future. In today’s world, where every day there are new cases of loss and despair, there are people who are waiting to benefit from the work of a helping hand. As the youth of the 21st century, we need to grow in wisdom, knowledge and tolerance. There are many unfortunate ones who need our help. This day should in fact strike a chord in the minds of innumerable young people and trigger their thoughts and goals towards the development of the world. If healthy minds and hearts of the youth are put forward together for action, then the world can become a better place to live in, for generations to come.
