Loud drivers create dangers

I am staying in Sharjah and many a times I have faced noise pollution from traffic (‘Community report in-depth: #Stopandcare: Why all the noise?’, Gulf News, September 1). While waiting at the signal for the lanes to open, there are these people with their expensive motorcycles moving in between cars and suddenly accelerating, which make horribly loud noises. One time this man was near my car and all of a sudden when he accelerated, the huge sound shocked me and it immediately increased my heart rate. I was forced to change my route and park the car in a parking area to bring my heart rate back to normal. These sorts of drivers should be punished by the court and they should be given a suspension on their driving licenses.

I thanked God as my one-year-old daughter and wife were not in the car at that moment. I am sure this type of sound would create a severe impact on children and infants.

The Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are doing their best to catch such drivers, but these drivers behave when they see any police vehicles. It would be better if the police monitored such drivers in undercover vehicles that can’t be easily recognised.

Preach peace and value life

I don’t think that any one nation is to be blamed for the chaos going on around the globe (‘Daesh’s horrifying practice of sex slavery’, Gulf News, August 31). We all are just unfaithful within ourselves and unfaithful to others and humanity at large. If only we stopped blaming others, we stopped the hatred, we respected every faith and their places of worship, we removed obstacles from any path to avoid injuries or death, we helped those in need and we prayed for the innocent civilians killed. If we preach peace, it’s only then that we as human beings will realise and value the true meaning of life, peace and solidarity.

Not permissible

It’s really horrifying that anyone could be involved in sex slavery because they thought their religion was better than others. Sex slavery is not at all permissible in Islam for any cause. May God save those innocent girls and their families.

Upholding rights

How is the UN allowing this to happen to these poor women? Aren’t these international organisations supposed to be responsible for international peace and human rights? They seem to be failing miserably.

What are we doing?

Such a tyrannous and an inhuman act that Daesh is committing. Why in the world are people silent? Why isn’t there any action being taken against these terrorists?

Islam preaches peace

These people have nothing to do with Islam - a religion that preaches love, respect and equal rights for all be it men or women, black or white, rich or poor, Muslim or non-Muslim. We all have the right to practice there faith, live peacefully and prosper. Daesh are extremists and they are something that Islam itself prohibits: No extremism in even the smallest things in life. Killing, raping and looting and then calling themselves Muslims? Shame on them.

Find who killed him!

The Gulf News story about the scholar who was shot dead was unfortunate to read (‘Kannada scholar shot dead in Karnataka’, Gulf News, August 31). He was a famous writer and professor who was bestowed the Indian Sahitya Akademi Award, who was brutally shot in his house and this is unacceptable. His murder should be investigated and the real truth should come out. The guilty should be punished. I pray for the departed soul and the grieving family members.

Metabolisms slow down

If it’s likely for older sisters to weigh more, it’s probably because of their ages and how the older you are, the slower your metabolism becomes (‘Bad news, big sister — your birth order may affect your weight’, Gulf News, August 30). So, she would be more likely to put on weight than the younger sibling who would have a faster metabolism. You need to measure the weights of both siblings when they reach the same age.

Most outstanding athlete

The Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, is conquering the sports world one venture after another by his magical style of running (‘Poll analysis: Best athlete ever: Having heart and humility’, Gulf News, August 31). The fearless Jamaican won gold in his favourite event, the 200-metre dash and clocking an electrifying time of 19.55 seconds with a jaw-dropping display at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, where he first shot to fame at the 2008 Olympics. Kissing the race bib and patting his chest before the race, Bolt quickly blew past Gatlin coming into the bend, surging clear to win in a season-leading time.

He is the only outstanding sports-person after Jesse Owen, the track and field Olympian from the 1930s.

True love does exist

Love, perhaps is a phenomenon that keeps the human race going. As of today, in a world where love or relationships are short lived or, in other words, the concept of growing old together is long forgotten, what if a couple happened to be living together for the past 60 years? Taking care of each other, having gone through different stages of life together, not leaving each other during bad times and instead being there for one another. Then I met Chuan, 93 years old, and Dong, 87 years old, from a small village called Phu Lang in the Que Vo district of Vietnam. They’ve given me hope that true love still exists in the universe.

To carry on their legacy, they were blessed with six children. They’ve raised them to be doctors, teachers and farmers, not to forget the fact they’ve trained them to take on life in a way that is beneficial for society and their family.

I experienced such a positive vibe inside their home. The welcome was so warm that language and culture was never a barrier and it never could be. Although Chuan couldn’t speak much, he did give me compassionate encouragement. The reason for this, one of their sons is a photographer by passion. As a photographer, I’m sure they saw their son in me.

Chuan is living his passion by writing poems, all of them dedicated to his beloved wife. It’s not about the years or days you live with a person, it’s all about how much you’re willing to be there for each other.

Sad fact from US

I think that it’s very sad that they have to accept that fatal shootings on a daily basis are acceptable (‘The blase acceptance that you may get shot is a fact of American life’, Gulf News, August 30). It seems odd for the US to have laws that allow for almost 100 per cent gun ownership. They have very high numbers of fatal shootings on a daily basis. It is so very sad.

Grand Slam ready

This year, the US Open is going to be a thrilling one (‘Extraordinary Coric has Nadal in his sights again’, Gulf News, August 30). Though, no one could predict the winner among the men, it’s no wonder that it’s been Serena Williams all the way in women. She has etch her name into the Grand Slam Winners list. There is no one who else who could match her power and temperament, especially when the match goes to the third set decider. With regards to where the Indian squad is concerned, it is a pity that after Ramesh Krishnan, no one has come up to the level of even qualifying. I feel this time Rohan Bhopanna has a chance to win the doubles. I doubt whether our Khel Ratnas may reach even the semis. Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed!
