Islam tells us to save lives

If he was a true Muslim, he wouldn’t have gone and killed all those people in Nice, France (“Bodies were sent flying like bowling pins by truck of death”, Gulf News, July 16). Suicide is forbidden in Islam and these terrorists are doing just that. They are in self-destruction mode as they go on killing innocents. How can they be Muslims if they don’t follow Islam? The Quran mentions that if anyone kills a person, it would be as if he has killed all mankind and if anyone saves a life, it would be as if he has saved the life of all mankind.

Condemn all brutality

It’s so sad and we strongly condemn this brutality. The killing of innocent people is totally unacceptable, whether it’s in Paris, France or in Pakistan by the Taliban.

Identifying suspects

While I strongly condemn the terror attack on France and its citizens, and I wish to see those behind it severely punished, I find it rather strange that these suspects who carry out terrorist attacks leave their identification documents behind, to be nabbed later. While the attack has surely taken place, I find it really strange that important documents are often left at the scene.

Sad day for France

France has had terrorist shootings and bombings in its cities and now, people have been run over by trucks. Terrorism seems to be happening everywhere in France now. It’s a sad day for the people of France on Bastille Day.

Where was security?

It’s high time that everyone realises that many of these attacks have nothing to do with the immigration crisis. First, this man, like all the others who have committed terror attacks in France recently, was a French citizen. He didn’t just arrive from the Middle East — he grew up in Nice. Those who think new immigrants are behind such attacks, clearly have no idea of the history and the fact that France is home to many, many unhappy citizens from countries that they colonised. Plus, their security is obviously not adequate. This psychopath should never have been able to run over innocent people for two kilometres before being taken out.

How did it happen?

How did this truck jump over the barricade? No car was supposed to get by that barricade. A police car could have just as easily come around and stopped it. They should have stopped him.

They had no right

Every person has the right to live their lives. No one has right to kill anyone for no reason - even animals. We need to share with each other how to live a good life, and not fall into bad ways. No one can stay on the Earth permanently, but it’s not up to us to decide when they should go.

Cry for them

Every human life counts. Don’t look at the nationality — everyone’s birth was decided by God and He is the only one with the right to decide a person’s death. No matter what nation, if you are a human, cry for the innocent lives lost. There is no need to bring nationality and religion into this.

No high alert?

How did the truck reach the crowd? Isn’t France on high alert after recent attacks? How did these people manage to put explosives inside the truck? Were there no check points? In these recent events in France, who is gaining ground? Who will eventually benefit from these horrific events?

What’s going on?

It’s shocking. How could anyone do this? Innocent children and families have been murdered. No God or religion condones this, so what is going on?

Pray for all

I’m praying for everyone, for all the victims of terrorist attacks - not only in Western countries. I won’t pray for any specific country, I’ll pray for all. France, Iraq, Syria or wherever! Let’s pray for all because the victims are all humans.

There are some very sick people in the world. What do they expect to gain from mass killing except hate? Prayers for victims worldwide!

Quickly forgotten

It is really surprising and shocking that Test cricket’s highest wicket taker has agreed to help Australian slow bowlers to conquer Sri Lanka in their own den (‘Murli switches ‘camp’ to plot Sri Lanka fall’, Gulf News, July 15). Has Muttiah Muralitharan forgotten the humiliation meted out to him in Australia during his first tour? If it weren’t for their strong captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, his career would have ended then and there. I feel he should have avoided this embarrassment for himself and his country of origin!

What does it mean?

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is in hot water (‘Posters calling for Pakistan coup are worrying’, Gulf News, July 14). Posters begging Pakistan’s powerful army chief to launch a coup appeared in 13 cities including the capital, Islamabad, overnight, raising eyebrows in a country that has been ruled by the military for more than half of its 69-year history. The posters, which also appeared in Lahore, Karachi and the garrison city of Rawalpindi as well as several army-run cantonment areas, were placed there by ‘Move on Pakistan’, a largely unknown political party founded in 2013. All the while, the army has remained silent. It is said that silence is, in one way or another, admittance. If so, this will be the end of Sharif’s era.

China is in the process of expansion

China’s response to the verdict of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague shows the country’s arrogance towards adverse situations (‘Law can’t solve the South China Sea conflict’, Gulf News, July 17). China alone cannot be blamed for it. The US and the UK invaded Iraq, ignoring the United Nations’ (UN) mandate, which was also an instance of irreverence to international institutions. But, the timing of this tribunal verdict is very important. An enmity has been formed between China and the Philippines at a time when the new president of the Philippines is trying to forge a better relation with China. Nobody can isolate China at this point in time because of the country’s financial influence worldwide, especially with the US. The presence of international institutions does not make any sense or difference in the world order. What Che Guevara once said, we too can say with confidence: “When forces of oppression come to maintain themselves in power against established law, peace is considered already broken.”

A fat tax won’t help!

Imposing 14.5 per cent fat tax on some food items by the Kerala government in India is not going in the right direction (‘Will a ‘fat tax’ save the world?’, Gulf News, July 13). Children and adults eat pizza, sandwiches, burgers and much more at least once a month, on a weekend or holiday. The prices of such fast food items are exorbitantly high, apart from an additional fat tax. This tax system will never keep people away from eating the wrong things. People eat whatever they like and while eating, they do not look at the price. Before implementing the tax, the Kerala Finance Minister should have checked the hygiene standard of each restaurant. I feel the tax is just a way to come up with more revenue for the Indian government. Instead of bringing in such taxes, the Finance Minister should have come up with something that wouldn’t affect the cost of food. If he had imposed a fine on restaurants for keeping unhygienic and expired food items, he could have collected more revenue than he would through a fat tax.
