Tragic death of family members

The tragic incident that occurred in Fujairah in which four Emiratis died after falling into a sewage hole has sent shock waves across the country (‘4 Emiratis die after falling into sewage hole’, Gulf News, August 30). The report says that while the father of the family attempted to clean the sewage pit, he fell in. In an attempt to save him, his two sons and son-in-law also descended into the pit. Lack of safety knowledge was the cause of this tragedy. They did not know that the noxious gases from sewage pits are highly poisonous. Therefore, it is advisable to include such lessons in schools and pamphlets, so that everyone can learn how to avoid such domestic accidents. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

All dreams ruined

It’s very difficult to imagine the pain of the poor family that died when they fell into a sewer. What an unbearable moment for the family to see the father and two sons die in one horrible accident. Within seconds, all dreams were ruined. May God give patience to the victims’ family. This happened due to trapped toxic gases inside the confined space. The authorities should start some basic awareness programs for pubic to avoid the loss of precious lives.

Let professionals manage it

It was very sad and disheartening to read such shocking news of these deaths. It was very sad to read that to a save their father, each one sacrificed their lives. It is really unimaginable that what will be reactions on hearing such drastic news for the wife, mother, father, siblings and other relatives. They sacrificed their lives in their own home. At least in the future, let this be an eye opener to each one of us who is residing in a villa not to risk their lives to save. Let us be professional and hand over such works to the related companies or individuals who are professional to handle this type of work.

Felt horrible reading of loss

I couldn’t sleep after reading this news in the newspaper that four died saving each other due to poisonous gas of chemicals. For such things, expert help should be used. Safety measures should be taken in all aspects of our lives. We should use our intellectual power for each and everything we are doing. Ignorance can take us to irreversible great loss.

May God give the family patience to bear this irreparable loss and to move on in their lives.

Looking out for wellbeing

I think that it was a good decision taken by the father in Saudi Arabia to tell a prospective groom for his daughter to lose weight before marriage arrangement can be considered (‘Father tells prospective groom to lose 55kg’, Gulf News, August 30). I’m glad to see the effort he thought about for his daughter’s wellbeing before allowing her to take this step.

Happens to women often

I don’t understand how this is news. Where I come from, girls are outright rejected just because they are fat, have dark skin or are too short. They are even rejected after engagements sometimes because the groom’s friends think the girl is a bit plump. That never made it to the papers.

Both stories exist

Actually, Ms Mahnaz Shaikh, I think it does get published from time to time. It wasn’t long ago that we were reading about the man who tried to sue his new wife for having a deceiving appearance with make-up on.

Protective fathers

I find this story very amusing! A father is a father, no matter which nationality. No man is ever good enough for their daughters. Some girls will always be their father’s little girl!

It’s her future!

It’s a good thing, I think. Girls are always expected to be thin and perfect, but there is no real pressure on men to look good as well. Imagine her future with a very obese husband versus a healthy one.

A win-win opportunity

Obesity has long been known to cause a lot of health issues, but it is surprising that it can also pose a hindrance in people’s marriage. Although the condition set by the girl’s father seems unfair at first, it is only going to benefit the man in the end. The man could lead a healthy life and win his love, all by shedding those extra kilograms. This seems like a great deal for all those involved!

A large problem

Obesity is the preventable cause of various heart diseases and it even increases risk of women’s cancer by 40 per cent. It is caused by a combination of excessive food intake and lack of physical activity. According to a Gulf News report, in the UAE there is a shocking rate of more than 66 per cent of men and 60 per cent of women being overweight or obese. A balanced diet and exercising are the main treatments for obesity. Some other preventive measures taken can be participating in sports events and joining health clubs. Consumption of foods can also be controlled. As good health is a virtue of life, I request the residents of the UAE to keep track on their regular exercise and diet to be part of a healthier future.

The plight of Filipino workers

The Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have for decades under the late Ferdinand Marcos government been given the privilege of sending parcels in return for the sacrifice of being away from our families (‘Filipinos rail against plan to tighten rules on parcels from abroad’, Gulf News, August 24). OFWs were recognised as earning cash assets, which then make its way back to the Philippines as remittances that help the economy. These “balikbayan” boxes were the OFWs’ reward - a privilege to be able to make our families back home happy with our small tokens and presents lovingly saved and chosen for them. What’s the big deal with this box? It’s actually a huge deal. It is love, sweat and tears for each item that goes into it. Not all OFWs are as lucky or as well placed as the next person. We have different situations and circumstances in our struggles abroad, with some not being lucky. But, one thing we have in common is our desire to send that box home at least once a year, especially during the Christmas season. We have nothing to hide and there is no contraband in our boxes. It is of no commercial or resale value in bulk. It is for our families. Such is our plight. The “balikbayan” box (literally meaning “back to our country”) has always been tax free and sacred to the OFWs and their families.

Everyone is back to the daily grind

Children are back to school and many residents are now back to the UAE! Our children are ready for their regular routine. Are you thrilled or nostalgic? Living here means enjoying the smart apps in a smart city like Dubai. Being here means you are part of the modern fast life. The more fast it is, the more difficult it is to fasten it. Feed your brain with more knowledge and with the true spirit of love and affection. Spiritual thoughts make you happy and others happier. Best wishes to all!
