Don’t waste food just because you paid for it

Two days ago I attended an iftar hosted by one of my friends (‘Ramadan fridges: Warm hearts make a cool idea work’, Gulf News, June 4). It was a buffet and what I noticed was that so much of food was being wasted. Everyone at the restaurant was breaking their fast and taking plates full of different dishes even though hardly half of it was being consumed. I asked one of my colleagues as to why he was filling up his plate so much if he can’t eat it, the reply was that we are paying for it, so what? I was really surprised with the answer, because what we don’t realise is that the food we leave as waste on our plates cannot be given to anybody – it ends up in the garbage. Whereas, if we do not take it on our plates, it will remain as extra food in the restaurant, which can be given to the really needy people who do not have enough money to eat good food during iftar. In Ramadan when we preach about giving and helping the needy, we can at least contribute a little by not wasting food.

The authorities have provided fridges across the city wherein the balance food at restaurants can be kept and it will reach the right people. I agree that it is our money that we are paying to eat at restaurants, but at least we can be humane by doing something good for society by not wasting food. We should think about the people who are starving around the globe and be thankful to God for at least giving us food.

Something to do the whole year

I hope this gesture will be alive even after Ramadan, too. It’s a great thing for these hard workers, giving their job. Many of them do not feel appreciated. We should at least be doing something that will work as an example for the rest of the world and for the younger generations.

Giving to others

What a nice gesture. I will mention how people help each other in Chile. In a blue collar workers’ neighbourhood, people almost three times a day, put bread or cooked rice, which is a surplus, in a bag and hang it with anything in front of their homes so that needy people can come and take it.

Keep up the pressure

Kudos to India’s Virat Kohli and his team for their win over Pakistan, that too coming after the captain-coach row, which was a real worry for one and all (‘India make merry in the rain with impressive win over Pakistan’, Gulf News, June 5). Now that this game is over and done, India’s team looks like a favourite to retain the Champions Trophy. Though it was a painful beginning for our openers, they took it in stride to lay a firm foundation to achieve a mammoth total. It was a real vintage cricket match by our top four batsmen, especially Yuvraj Singh, who deservedly got the Man of the Match award. Well done Men in Blue! Keep up this tempo in the remaining matches, too.

Please drive safe!

To all my brothers and sisters, please drive safe, as every single day someone is waiting for you at home (‘Emirati woman dies in RAK car accident minutes before ending fast’, Gulf News, June 4). Drive with care - it’s not a joke. If you need to change lanes, give a signal. If you need to go fast, drive in the left lanes, please.

Driving is not a game

When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you have a job to do. Get to where you are going without an accident. It is a job like every other – focus, pay attention and take it seriously. It is not a game, it is not a place to switch on loud music and relax. Focus and slow down. Keep your distance from the person in front.

Arrive alive

Be safe while driving and make others drive safely, too! Someone is always around in your life who is waiting for you to arrive safe! Don’t bring sorrow in their life.

A green city

I love the ideas to make the city greener and the way it gets implemented and maintained (‘‘Forests’ under bridges to beautify Dubai’, Gulf News, June 4). Let Dubai be evergreen and peaceful always and bring changes and peace to the whole world.
