Bullying is a form of both physical and mental abuse

One of the biggest problems in today’s society is bullying. It exists in many forms, spanning from cyber bullying to children picking on others in school. It can happen in ways more than just physical contact. Many a time, bullies use rash words that psychologically hurt the victim, having drastic effects on their mental state.

This puts it onto us to ensure that bullying cannot take place, so those weak to stand up against these oppressors can have a voice of their own against bullies. These ways include monitoring who your child adds on their social media, schools having strict rules against bullying and punishment enforced on every bully who is caught in the act.

Workers need proper training

Did the worker injure himself with a welding machine with sharp edges or did he get electrified by putting his hand inside the machine’s parts while the power was on (‘Worker’s hand amputated after injury at workplace’, Gulf News, February 8)? This is a “regular” story of accidents when, too often, the owners don’t properly train their staff to work safely in a dangerous environment. The poor man, he is a young fellow and now he has to live without his hand for only a few bucks.

Many parks needed

We don’t need just one dog park, but many dog walking parks that can be accessed by residents all over Dubai (‘Dog-walking park coming to Dubai soon’, Gulf News, February 8).

Supporting animal lovers

This is good news for all pet lovers in Dubai. Hats off for the dog park idea and support to animal lovers. We definitely need more dog parks all around Dubai and more pets allowed in apartments. Looking forward to the opening of the dog park!

Implement a pet ownership deposit

Dog licences should be compulsory in the UAE. There should be a Dh10,000 refundable fee that you are eligible to get back when you leave if you take your dog home with you, if you transfer your ownership or if you have written confirmation from a vet that the dog has died. There are too many dogs dumped on the streets when owners leave or go on vacation for the summer.

Child safety issues to address

Last week a four-year-old girl fell to her death from the eighth floor of a building when she slipped through the grille (‘Four-year-old girl dies after falling from Sharjah building’, Gulf News, February 5). This is not the first time something like this has happened, and it is always very depressing. They shouldn’t keep the windows open. Secondly, the grille’s bars should be thicker and closer together. I also think that the parents or housemaids should not leave their children unattended in front of open windows. Finally, the windows should be higher so that children can’t climb to it.

My own miracle

I can relate with the parents of the premature baby as my daughter was premature, too (‘Miracle baby who weighed less than an iPad at birth, goes home’, Gulf News, February 8). She was born at six months and two weeks into the pregnancy and weighed 800g. She had to stay two months in the hospital. Thank God she survived. She is eight years old now and very healthy.

Odd comparison

It’s good to hear that the miracle baby is doing well. I just don’t understand why they have to compare the baby’s weight to an iPad.

Empathetic with parents

Great job to the doctor that saved the baby’s life. I can understand the feeling of the parents, as my daughter was also premature.

Another miracle

One of my relatives was born in the early 1990s and he was premature. He would fit in the palm of your hand. They wrapped him in tin foil. He made it.

Made a living of travelling

Traveling around the world is a dream that everyone has (‘Facebook video: Would you quit your job and travel the world?’, Gulf News, February 7). You can do it without quitting your job, though. Plus, you cannot quit from a job if it’s your passion! Do your passion. Travelling is this man’s job, and it is also his passion.

Takes patience

I have been travelling, but I don’t need to quit my job. Besides, that kind of travelling is costly and you need time and patience to save and be frugal.

Bit of money and luck

Yes, it’s difficult to travel the world. In order to do so, we need to have enough money or enough opportunity to fulfil our dreams by visiting each country.

Dubai is ahead on accessibility

I’ve been in cities all over the world and Dubai is much better than most for wheelchair accessibility (‘How disabled-friendly is Dubai?’, Gulf News, February 7). However, as with everywhere, more needs to be achieved. Being so far ahead, Dubai has a real opportunity to lead the world here with more investment, initiatives and laws. Cities like London are years behind.

Needs improvement

I love Dubai, but I would like to see more areas for pedestrians to walk on the streets, for wheelchairs users to get around and for mothers and their children, too. The reason other cities are behind on these implementations is due to the historic nature of older cities. London, UK is spending millions to improve accessibility.

Cars on sidewalks

One of the biggest inconsiderate things that I see in Dubai is the amount of people who park their cars on the sidewalks. It means that people in wheelchairs and mothers with strollers are obstructed.

Risky behaviour

North Korea has openly warned the US and the West that they aren’t scared of them (‘North Korea launches space rocket in defiance of sanctions threats’, Gulf News, February 8). These countries want to end the US era of supremacy. But, in fact, all it is doing is pushing us closer to a world war.

From Mr Aasif Rana

Why is this the problem?

What’s the fuss all about? They are only launching a rocket in their own territory and airspace. Nobody is hurt or dead. Other countries are bombarding Syria almost every day or oppressing the people of Palestine, where innocent lives are lost and affected. This is what needs to be dealt with, but nobody cares.

People are suffering elsewhere

To improve the defence of a country isn’t in violation of the law. But elsewhere we are failing to protect a country from invaders. How many people are killing innocent Muslims without any reason and where is the UN to take stern action against those tyrants?

School timings

The UAE authorities should also look into changing school timings. Children in school from 7.30am till 3.30pm is too much and also dangerous in traffic.
