Bless this country with its tolerance and peace

Every year, new things happen that show the UAE’s great level of compassion (‘Watch: This Al Ain church just opened its doors for iftar and maghrib prayers for hundreds of Muslim workers’, Gulf News, June 14). The UAE is such a great nation, with religious peace and an understanding of faith. Last year, in December, a Muslim restaurant gave free meals to Christians as part of a Christmas celebration. This is a great country. May the grace of God continue to abide in the UAE. I pray to God to bless the leaders and good people of this country.

Be a good person

Humanity and love for each other is what makes us good human beings. It’s been taught in every religion and I wish everyone could understand this.

Peace and tolerance

This is the beauty of the UAE. Everyone is so much at peace with each other and tolerant. The rest of the world needs to take a leaf out of this nation’s book.

Upholding values and dignity

I appreciate the thoughtfulness and the worthy deeds of kindness that uphold human values and dignity. We need a ripple effect of such valuable understanding. May the month of Ramadan, with all its prayers, fasting and abstinence, bring love, peace and understanding to all mankind.

Catch the ball!

Late Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath always used to say: “Catches win matches”. How true it has proved to be during the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy. Had only Thishara Perera made the catch offered by Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Khan, Sri Lanka could have entered the semi-finals. So was the case with Matthew Wade, who dropped the catch of England’s captain, Eoin Morgan. He came in to bat at a precarious position and went on to make a match winning score of 87, stitching together a mammoth partnership with Ben Stokes to knock out Australia. Another catch, which cost Sri Lanka, was when Lasith Malinga dropped one hit by Faf du Plessis, who went on to make 75 to bail out South Africa. Even India’s own Yuvraj Singh had a charmed batting life, when Hasan Ali dropped the catch, which proved to be a boon for Singh to regain his lost glory.

Major threat

These lone attacks indicate a worrying problem (‘Several wounded by shots at German rail station, man detained’, Gulf News, June 14). The attackers are usually depressed or mentally unstable individuals who are trying to vent out their frustration or living in a fantasy. These people pose a major threat to those around them and require immediate help. Such individuals are a greater risk to society, because they seem like ordinary people who do not represent a larger group or organisation and are difficult to trace or identify.

Prevent children from smoking

Smoking is bad and everyone knows that. Unfortunately, not everyone understands it. Parents who smoke hurt their children, not only by making them passive smokers, but also by setting an example that they can never take back. It is hard to stop teens from smoking, but raising them not to be smokers is a lot easier. Make sure they adopt the belief that smoking is not manly or cool, and that it is not for grown-ups. Each of the suggestions here minimises the chance that your child will smoke.

I saw an advertisement that could be used as a very good example of how to use positive thoughts to make people stop smoking. Instead of telling them how bad things will happen to them if they smoke, point out all the good things that will happen to them if stop smoking. Watching so many negative ads, I never learned as much about the impact of smoking on the body as I did from watching a positive advertisement.

If you want to raise children who do not smoke, start by being good role models. Children can make a big difference in the fight against smoking. Hearing it from children is often believed to be the best anti-smoking campaign for adults. Every cigarette you don’t smoke is doing you good.
