Abu Dhabi: Two teams consisting of UAE schoolchildren have secured the first and the fifth positions in different competitions at the international World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2013, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) announced in a statement Tuesday.

A team from the Our Own English High School (Al Warqaa in Dubai) won first place in the Open competition’s senior category, while another team from Millennium School won the fifth place in the Open competition’s elementary category. In this Open competition, teams had been tasked to create a robot that promoted a World Heritage Site.

In addition, a group from the Technical High School was awarded for having an outstanding project, the Adec statement added.

The WRO is a yearly competition that encourages children to develop robotic models to meet a variety of challenges. Participants are organised into three different age groups.

Speaking about the win, Dr Mugheer Al Khaili, Adec director general, said that the success showed that UAE schoolchildren were able to compete effectively on an international stage. He also congratulated the winning teams and encouraged future teams to excel in future WRO competitions.
