Sharjah: The much-awaited Al Jubail Vegetable, Meat and Fish Market officially opened on Friday to provide a better shopping experience for residents and cater to Sharjah’s growing demand for fresh produce.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah inaugurated the Dh195 million market in Al Jubail area consisting of two floors extending over an area of 37,000 square metres.

The first floor of the market, with three designated areas, contains 91 shops for selling fish, including a section with equipment for cleaning and cutting fish, 76 poultry and meat shops and 212 vegetable and fruit shops.

The market also has an upper floor that contains the administrative section and the office of Sharjah’s Cooperative Society for Fishermen. The outdoor section of the market has been allocated to transport fish from the boats to the shops.

Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah also attended the opening of the marketplace.

After cutting the ribbon, Shaikh Sultan toured the market’s various sections along with a number of officials and listened to detailed presentations on the market’s facilities and services rendered to consumers. He then inspected the market’s various facilities and modern equipment.

The establishment of Jubail market is a translation of the directives of Shaikh Sultan and in line with government development plans aimed to launch several projects to develop economic and services sectors in Sharjah.

The new fish market was built to replace the old one next to the creek. In the present complex, there’s a system where fishmongers can conserve and handle fish through hygienic methods.

Waleed Ebrahim Al Sayegh, CEO of Sharjah Asset Management, said, “The construction of an integrated market for vegetables, fruits, meat and fish exemplifies the vision of Shaikh Sultan to improve service facilities and fulfil the needs of citizens and residents in Sharjah.”

The market, designed and built according to Islamic architecture, has a parking area that can accommodate up to 370 cars.
