Dubai: The Sprite Cricket Stars tournament is back for the fifth year as it aims to promote grassroot cricket among the UAE’s working community.

This year’s tournament aims to be the biggest and encourages region’s amateur teams to register for a chance to be crowned the 2016 Sprite Cricket Stars champions.

Last year’s event attracted a total of 300 teams who stepped up to the crease for their shot at amateur cricket glory. The ‘Rowdies’, from UAE, emerged the 2015 champions, overcoming the Dubai Municipality team at Abu Dhabi’s Shaikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. There is no entry fee and every team can register for free.

There will be three divisions — corporates, open teams and blue collar workers — with a total prize money of Dh66,000. For each division, the winning team wins a prize of Dh15,000 in cash, while the runner-up team earns Dh5,000. The Best Bowler and Best Batsman from each division will also land themselves Dh1,000 in cash each.

Sprite is also running a promotional campaign alongside the Sprite Cricket Stars tournament. Entrants have the chance to win instant prizes including free Sprite beverages and cricket kits, or earn ‘runs’ during each week which could see them earn solid gold worth up to Dh5,000.
