Dubai: The Consul General of India (CGI) team defeated India Club by five runs in the final of the Annual CGI indoor cricket tournament held at India Club earlier this week.

Batting first, the CGI team managed a challenging total of 52 from their allotted eight overs. The first two pairs did well to post 42 runs on the board, but the remaining two pairings could jointly manage just ten runs to set a challenging total before India Club.

The India Club chase was steady given the asking rate of 6.5 runs per over. But the CGI team refused to give up as they backed up some tight bowling with some brilliant run-outs to leave India Club needing 16 runs from the final two overs.

India Club managed nine runs in the penultimate over, leaving themselves the task of getting seven in the final six balls. However, young Vyom Sharma turned out to be the star for the CGI team as he bagged two wickets at the cost of a couple of runs to leave Sandeep Chaudhary’s CGI team triumphant by five runs. Atul Rai from CGI won the man of the match award, with a return ticket to India from Jet Airways.

Organised by the Consulate General of India (CGI) in collaboration with IBPC, India Club and Bank of Baroda, the one-day cricket tournament had four teams participating for top honours.

In the earlier play-offs, IBPC and Bank of Baroda bowed out leaving the CGI team and India Club to contest for the title.

Kulwant Singh, President, IBPC Dubai, was pleased with the role sport plays in bringing together communities. “Events such as these help us celebrate the value and thrill of sportsmanship and bring the community together to honour the spirit of healthy competition,” Singh said.

Trophies were presented to the winners by Vasu Shroff, chairman, India Club in the presence of Kulwant Singh, president, IBPC and Deepa Jain, who represented the Consulate General of India in Dubai.
